Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [550]

Mew was furious.
And the very first thing an angry Mew did was turn those big, watery eyes pitifully toward August.

Her whole face radiated wounded grievance.

“Mew~”

She clutched at his clothes, giving them a little shake.

Even August couldn’t quite bring himself to say “no” to that look.

“…Sigh. Fine, I can’t say no to you. Don’t worry—I’ll help you drive out the intruder.”

At those words, Mew let out a delighted cheer, zipped up to sit on his shoulder, and began waving her tiny paws toward the World Tree like a mecha pilot giving commands, directing her “August Unit” into battle.

August: “…”

Shaking his head, he turned toward Koga and patted him on the shoulder.

“The dangerous vanguard job’s all yours.”

Koga: “?”

Why am I the one taking point when this is about standing up for your own Pokémon?

Seeing Koga’s baffled face, August replied matter-of-factly, “Take it up with Lance—he’s the one who told you to come help me. Said you might have to act as a decoy now and then…”

He sold Lance out without hesitation.

Koga’s fists tightened.

Lance, you… you’re getting less and less human under August’s influence.

But anger or not...
Orders were orders, and Lance was his superior.

Swallowing his bitterness, Koga released Crobat, following Mew’s directions from August’s shoulder toward the World Tree’s interior.

Crobat and Koga led the way. August, Mew, and Hoopa took the middle; Tyranitar guarded the rear.

Inside, the World Tree was just as August remembered—tunnels of rock and green crystal intertwined, the crystals glowing faintly with a life-rich aura.

This time, however, there were no Regi-trio sentries to greet them.

Mew floated up to one of the crystals, reaching out with psychic power to open the path to the core.

But the World Tree’s reaction wasn’t what she expected.
It still felt warm and familiar—but not like before. Instead of answering her freely, it… hesitated.

Mew’s little paws balled into fists.
There’s a bad guy inside the World Tree!

August watched. The reaction confirmed it—the Tree was in trouble.

“Hoopa!”

Hoopa, who’d been happily prying a shard off a jutting crystal, turned to proudly show it off.

“Mew! [○`Д′○]”

Mew’s voice rose in anger.

“( ̄▽ ̄~) Che~~” Hoopa looked away.
The Tree doesn’t even want you anymore—why are you protecting it?

The words made Mew’s eyes brim with tears.
Why doesn’t the World Tree want me anymore…?

A thought struck August. He stepped forward, pressing his aura into the Tree.

At once, the crystals stirred like liquid, shifting into a massive passage before them—far faster than it had responded to Mew.

Seeing this, Mew’s tears finally spilled over.
The World Tree treated August better than it treated her!

“…This is…”

Koga swallowed hard, glancing uneasily at August. Something about this felt… dangerous.

But August, letting Mew drag him forward, only said, “It’s fine. Let’s go.”

He, Mew, and Hoopa entered first, Tyranitar squeezing in after them.

Koga grit his teeth and followed.

Traveling through the Tree’s passage was a strange sensation—Koga found himself wrapped in green “liquid,” yet breathing just fine.

Before he could get used to it, the tunnel brightened, and he stepped out into a vast chamber.

Green crystals lined the walls, carrying light from outside into the space so it was bright despite being sealed.

Ahead, he saw August and Tyranitar—apparently facing off against something.

When Koga came closer, he found the “something” was a strikingly beautiful Pokémon, standing with a group of others.

Mew was bristling at August’s back, shouting at the stranger.

So this was the “culprit” who’d lured Larvitar away.

The descriptions from Mt. Silver’s wild Pokémon—pink, cute, hopped when it walked—had made him think of Mew.
Instead…

Here stood a Pokémon with a huge pink diamond set in her forehead, a white dress above a rocky lower body.

Diancie.

Rock/Fairy mythical Pokémon, a mutated Carbink, princess of the Diamond Domain.

All of which was secondary to the real question: how had a Pokémon from Kalos ended up here in Kanto?

Diancie, for her part, seemed startled by the sudden intruders. She hadn’t even spoken before Mew zipped right up to her, tiny fists clenched in fury.

“Eh? Thief? You mean me?” Diancie tilted her head in confusion.

Before she could answer, two Carbink guards stepped forward protectively.

Do not be rude to Her Highness!

Mew hadn’t expected the intruder to act so righteously, and it made her too mad to even think about cake.

She pointed around them, then at herself.

“Mew!”

This is mine!

Having declared ownership, she reached for Mewtwo’s Poké Ball to evict the intruders—

But to her surprise, Diancie’s first reaction was… to apologize.

“I’m sorry—I didn’t know this was your home. I was just wandering and stopped here to rest. I truly apologize.”

That threw Mew off.
She hadn’t expected the “invader” to be this polite.

Still, politeness didn’t fix the damage—because of this Pokémon, the World Tree she’d known for millennia had turned away from her.

The thought brought her grievance back in a rush.

Diancie, sensing her mood, ignored the protests of her guards and hopped over to comfort her—then, with a flash of light, produced a sparkling pink diamond.

Mew took it, eyes going wide, all grievances forgotten in an instant.

August: “…”
That was fast.

The diamond soon dissolved into motes of light, and Diancie, looking slightly embarrassed, formally introduced herself:

“My name is Diancie, Princess of the Diamond Domain. I’m seeking the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas to save my country.”

Xerneas?

At that name, both Hoopa and Mew looked at August.

He only gave them a look in return, not mentioning that Xerneas was with him.

Instead, he asked, “Xerneas should be in Kalos, right? How did you end up in Kanto?”

Before Diancie could answer, her two Carbink guards started chattering.

...

In short:
They had been searching for Xerneas when, midway, they saw a TV report of a “villain named August” capturing Xerneas.

Tracking this “villain” to Kanto, they’d escorted Diancie across the sea—only to be attacked en route by kidnappers. They’d been forced to land in Johto, though the kidnappers mysteriously vanished afterward.

Eventually, wandering, they’d reached the World Tree to rest before continuing to Kanto to find the “villain” August.

“We didn’t know this was your home—our apologies!” Diancie said again to Mew.

By now, Mew wasn’t especially angry.

She was more interested in seeing August’s face after being called “the big bad guy.”

August: “…”
So you’re over it, huh?

At least he now understood how Diancie had ended up here.

“You’re looking for August?” he asked.

Diancie nodded eagerly.

“Do you know what he looks like?”

She turned to the Carbink, who rummaged around and produced a piece of paper—
bearing a childish, wobbly scribble that looked nothing like a person, more like an ancient abstract mural of Mew.

Even Mew stopped smiling at that.

Koga, however, couldn’t help laughing.

Quick as a flash, August stopped Mew from tearing the drawing apart, then said with a straight face, “I know the August you’re talking about. I can take you to him.”

“Really?” Diancie’s eyes shone.

“Really.”

How she’d made it from Kalos to Kanto without being conned or caught was a small miracle.

Your Highness! the Carbink tried to protest.

But Diancie waved them off. “I can feel he’s a good person.”

August, who’d just been branded a villain, was blindsided by a “good guy” card.

Still, he appreciated her judgment—there weren’t many these days who recognized his virtues at a glance.

Inviting Diancie to join their group, he turned to the long-suffering Tyranitar—
only to remember Larvitar.

“Right, have you seen a Larvitar—about this tall?” He gestured.

“Yes,” Diancie said. “Follow me.”

She hopped ahead to lead the way.

Watching how familiar she was with the Tree, Mew felt her earlier pang of jealousy creep back in.

She’s leaving soon… She’s leaving soon…

Such a bad tree.

She punched it with a tiny fist, earning nothing but a sore, swollen paw, which she promptly brought to August for healing.

“Still laughing at me?” he asked.

She shook her head rapidly.

Only then did he release the [Power of Viridian] to heal her, the comforting energy making Diancie even more certain of her read—

Anyone with such power must be a good person.

“By the way, I haven’t asked your name yet,” Diancie said.

“Oh, I’m Giovanni,” August replied without blinking.

“Pfft—”

Koga almost choked.

August shot him a look, and he forced his face back into seriousness.

Diancie, unsuspecting, nodded. “Alright, Mr. Giovanni—this way.”

Through another tunnel, they emerged into a vast garden filled with wild Pokémon—Clefairy Mew had once brought here, the Regi trio guardians of the Tree.

And there, their target Larvitar, lying by a giant [Moon Stone], drooling.

Two Clefairy stood watch, tense and ready to protect their sacred stone from any sudden bite.

The newcomers’ arrival drew the attention of the Pokémon below.

“Clef~!”

The Clefairy brightened at the sight of August.

The Regi trio, spotting Mew, guiltily turned their backs.
