Pokémon: My Titles Know No Limits! [479]

“Diamond is down to his last Pokémon! Will he stage a dramatic comeback? Let’s wait and see!” the commentator shouted enthusiastically, doing his best to keep the audience from leaving prematurely.

But any trainer with even basic battle knowledge could see Diamond was already at an overwhelming disadvantage—his defeat seemed inevitable.

Unless something extraordinary happened, Ash would certainly advance to the finals.

Holding this thought, the commentator turned his eyes back to the battlefield.

“Let’s see what Pokémon Diamond’s final choice will be—wait, what in the world is that?!” The commentator stared in astonishment at the Pokémon now looming over the arena.

Hearing the commentator's shocked reaction, spectators who had started leaving their seats turned back curiously, wondering what could have caused such an outburst from an official commentator.

And then…

They too froze in disbelief.

Standing before Diamond was a Pokémon as massive as a small mountain, its huge white body decorated with strange black markings. Green vegetation sprouted from its shoulders and feet, and three pairs of colored circles—red, blue, and gray—lined its chest.

“What kind of Pokémon is that?!”

The same question filled everyone's minds.

Gold immediately turned toward Gary. "Gary-senpai, what Pokémon is that?"

As the tactical advisor for Kanto’s Silver Conference delegation, surely Gary would know, Gold assumed.

Gary: “...”

Why ask me? How am I supposed to know where Diamond caught something that weird?

Despite his inward complaints, Gary refused to admit his ignorance outright. Instead, he put on a mysterious air and said cryptically, “Of course I know. Just keep watching, and you'll figure it out soon enough!”

Seeing Gary’s suspiciously confident expression, Gold raised an eyebrow doubtfully.

“Gary-senpai... You don't actually know either, do you?”

Gary’s heart jumped nervously, but he stubbornly insisted, “How could that be possible? I’m the tactical coach! Of course I know…”

“Then tell us its name,” Sabrina calmly interjected.

Gary instantly began stammering awkwardly, unable to come up with a convincing response. Witnessing Gary’s embarrassment, the entire VIP box erupted into good-natured laughter.

Gary flushed red and muttered something along the lines of, “It’s totally normal not to remember every Pokémon’s name,” and “Of course I know, I'm the tactical coach…”

Unusually, August refrained from joining in teasing Gary. Instead, gazing at Regigigas on the battlefield, he quietly marveled at fate’s strange workings.

Even after bringing Diamond all the way to Johto, fate somehow still arranged for Regigigas—the legendary "Toilet King"—to become Diamond’s Pokémon?

But that meant…

August turned sympathetically toward Ash, who was still gaping in shock.

I guess it really is destiny that Ash won’t win the championship…

Meanwhile, Ash finally snapped out of his stunned state as he stared up at Regigigas.

A normal trainer’s first reaction might have been panic or fear, but Ash, being Ash, felt nothing but pure excitement and curiosity.

A Pokémon I've never seen before!

He whipped out his Pokédex, unsurprised when it failed to identify the Pokémon.

“What kind of Pokémon is that?” Ash asked eagerly, eyes gleaming.

“This is Regi!” Diamond answered cheerfully.

“Where did you catch it? It looks incredibly strong!” Ash continued, fascinated.

“Well, actually—”

“Both trainers, please avoid idle chat…” The referee coughed gently, reminding them that they were still in a match.

Realizing the referee’s point, Ash reluctantly ended the conversation and turned back toward his Pokémon.

“Bayleef!” Ash called.

Though Bayleef was slightly intimidated by Regigigas’s immense presence, hearing Ash’s voice immediately strengthened her resolve.

I won’t disappoint Ash!

Bayleef braced herself, then launched into an immediate attack—

[Return]

Right out of the gate, she unleashed her strongest move.

Yet Regigigas reacted strangely slowly, barely registering Bayleef’s attack until well after it landed, and then sluggishly swinging an arm to counterattack—missing completely.

“This Pokémon seems incredibly slow!” the commentator noted excitedly. “Bayleef is easily exploiting her speed advantage.”

Hearing the commentary, August nodded slightly. This was Regigigas’s trademark [Slow Start] ability in action.

Diamond scratched his head awkwardly. “Yeah, Regi’s always like this... But he’ll speed up soon enough!”

Bayleef’s body glowed again as she rammed powerfully into Regigigas’s colossal frame.

But despite the attack—which would’ve easily shattered solid rock—Regigigas merely shuddered slightly, as unaffected as an ocean absorbing a tossed pebble.

“It took that attack head-on without flinching?!” Gary had finally recovered from shock and stared at the battlefield in disbelief.

He understood deeply just how terrifying Ash’s Bayleef’s [Return] could be—even he’d hesitate to confront it head-on. Yet, Diamond’s Pokémon had already absorbed multiple hits without even faltering.

Finally, curiosity overcame pride: “August, what exactly is that Pokémon?”

Before August could reply, Hoopa chimed in gleefully, “Hehe! It’s Regigigas! Hoopa knows!”

Before Hoopa had lost its full powers, it used to summon Regigigas for fun, waiting until [Slow Start] ended before quickly sending it back. Regigigas had never been able to stop Hoopa’s antics.

Gary looked skeptically at Hoopa.

“Hoopa’s right,” August confirmed calmly. “Diamond’s Pokémon is Regigigas, a legendary giant said to have dragged continents with ropes, creating the Hisui region.”

Everyone exchanged skeptical glances, utterly unconvinced.

They could believe it was legendary, sure—but dragging continents? Creating Hisui?

The group looked at Regigigas, then mentally compared it to the Hisui and Sinnoh regions they knew. It didn’t seem possible.

Though imposing, this Pokémon wasn’t even as tall as Mount Coronet.

Seeing their disbelief, August shrugged. “Don’t look at me. That’s just how the legend goes.”

Meanwhile, Ash and Bayleef continued their relentless attacks on the motionless titan. But despite their continuous effort, Regigigas showed only minor scratches—barely harmed at all.

Still, Regigigas’s slow reaction gave Ash hope.

The commentator noted eagerly, “Diamond’s Pokémon appears entirely passive, unable to land even a single counterattack!”

But just as he finished speaking, the battlefield shifted dramatically.

Bayleef struck again with Return—but unlike previous attacks, Regigigas now shuddered violently.

Bayleef’s face lit up happily. Had her persistence finally paid off?

“Bay!” She joyfully turned toward Ash to share the good news, but froze upon seeing his tense, shocked expression.

“Bayleef, watch out!”

Confused, Bayleef glanced backward—and saw Regigigas towering right behind her.

Impossible! How did it move so fast?

Bayleef couldn’t comprehend the sudden speed.

But this was exactly the moment Diamond had been waiting for.

Regigigas had finally shaken off its [Slow Start], awakening its true, terrifying power.

Its massive shadow enveloped Bayleef completely.

“Dodge quickly, Bayleef!” Ash shouted urgently.

Bayleef immediately tried to leap away—but Regigigas was no longer sluggish. With frightening speed, it brought its enormous hand crashing down toward the ground.

[Mega Punch]!” Diamond commanded.

Not an especially powerful move normally, but in Regigigas’s hands…

BOOM!!

The palm didn’t aim directly at Bayleef but slammed the ground beside her instead. The entire battlefield shook violently, cracks spreading outward in a hundred-meter radius, completely destroying the terrain.

Bayleef was hurled away by the resulting shockwave.

Deoxys, at the edge of the arena, reverted from its defensive form back to normal, dismissing the protective barrier it had placed in front of the terrified referee.

“Th-thank you!” the referee stammered, sweating heavily. “Thank you very much!”

He had nearly lost his life!

Since when did refereeing a tournament become so dangerous?!

Meanwhile, Regigigas seized the heavily injured Bayleef in one enormous hand. She struggled feebly, unable to break free.

Although his legs trembled violently, the referee’s professionalism took over:

“Bayleef is unable to battle!”

His voice shook slightly, but no one laughed—instead, they deeply respected his courage.

“Incredible!” the commentator shouted. “Diamond’s Pokémon has demonstrated astonishing strength!”

If not for professional neutrality, he’d have openly declared Diamond the inevitable winner right then and there. After all, who could possibly stand against such a Pokémon in a regional championship?

Back in the spectator box, everyone stared at Gary simultaneously.

Gary stared back defensively. “Why’s everyone looking at me?!”

“No reason.” August patted Gary’s shoulder sympathetically. “Just celebrating your permanent position at the bottom of Kanto Division’s legendary Pokémon trainer rankings.”

“What…?” Gary wanted to object, but glanced again at Regigigas on the battlefield.

Maybe, just maybe… his Suicune really couldn’t handle Regigigas?

Seeing Gary’s conflicted face, August reassured him bluntly: “You can remove the ‘maybe.’ Your Suicune absolutely cannot beat Regigigas.”

Despite its [Slow Start] and sluggishness, even if Suicune attacked continuously, it wouldn’t significantly hurt Regigigas.

Gary fell silent.

So, not only could I never surpass August, but now even Diamond would overtake me soon?

Gary felt a bitter pang of sadness.

On the battlefield, Ash recalled Bayleef gently. “You did your best, Bayleef. Rest up.”

Looking up determinedly, Ash pulled his hat down firmly.

He’d made it all the way to the semifinals—he couldn’t give up now!

“Go, Charizard!” Ash threw his Poké Ball, releasing Charizard.

Charizard roared proudly, spewing flames skyward to assert dominance—

Then immediately froze upon spotting Regigigas.

Charizard instantly lowered its head.

Sorry, I was too loud just now…

Before Regigigas, even the fearless Charizard learned humility.

...

“Charizard is unable to battle! Ash’s Pokémon are all defeated—the winner is Diamond!”

Ash looked disappointed at first, but quickly regained his usual positivity. He was genuinely happy for Diamond’s victory.

Diamond beamed joyfully as the crowd erupted in applause.

“We did it, Regi!” Diamond shouted happily.

Regigigas gently lifted Diamond onto its shoulder—but then promptly fell asleep, leaving Diamond trapped and scratching his head awkwardly.

Journalists swarmed like Sharpedo sensing blood, surrounding Diamond and the sleeping titan:

“Diamond, what’s your Pokémon called?”

“Diamond, do you think you’ll win the championship now?”

“Diamond…uh, he fell asleep?”

They stared blankly at Diamond, who was now snoozing peacefully atop Regigigas’s massive shoulder.
