The Black-Stockinged Nun Is Actually a Boy?! [22]

Watching the players rush off excitedly to finish the quest, Helen finally let out a sigh of relief.

This was only her second time cooperating (read: scamming) with players. With so many involved this time, it was natural she’d been a bit nervous.

Still, her scheme—pairing seductive violet flames with simple [Black Iron Swords]—had worked perfectly. At least no one had questioned it.

In fact, she’d made quite the profit. [Black Iron Swords] and medical supplies were worth only a few dozen silver coins, whereas [Tier-2 Seeds] were hundreds of silver coins—if you could even find one.

Sirens and harpies could occasionally yield [Tier-2 Seeds], but the odds were minuscule, making them almost impossible to buy on the market.

By packaging this as a player quest, she got her upgrade, the players got their fun—what wasn’t to like?

This was textbook win-win!

Feeling pleased with herself, Helen watched the last players depart, stashed the [Soul Swords] back in the carriage, and returned to the chapel. The moment she stepped inside, though, she realized something was wrong.

Natalie stood with her [Frost Broom] held defensively, warily watching a girl beneath the chapel’s statue—a girl wearing… a goldfish dress?!

Pink hair, scarlet eyes, and an elegant crimson-gold dress patterned after a goldfish. Her aloof beauty and shapely figure were unmistakable.

No question: the person before them was Evelia, future leader of the vampires.

And incidentally, she was third-ranked in the “Most Marryable Girls” poll printed in the newspaper.

“It seems we have a guest,” Helen murmured, stepping slowly toward Natalie.

Natalie quietly shifted forward a step, placing herself protectively between Helen and the stranger.

Helen glanced at her, confused.

“We’re both spellcasters, and that shameless woman over there is clearly some sort of assassin. You’ll be safer behind me,” Natalie whispered earnestly.

She might not have formal battle training, but even she knew protecting support classes came first.

Helen just smiled calmly, stepping forward despite Natalie’s anxious, startled expression. She walked boldly until she stood directly in front of Evelia.

Evelia, who had remained silent under the statue until now, seemed taken aback that Helen would approach her. A flicker of surprise briefly disturbed her usually impassive expression, though it quickly returned to neutrality.

“May I ask what brings you here, Miss Evelia?” Helen clasped her hands politely.

Evelia stayed quiet for a moment, blinking softly before finally asking, “You’re not afraid of me?”

“You bear us no ill intent,” Helen replied simply, relaxing her hands and meeting Evelia’s gaze directly.

Evelia stared silently back, saying nothing.

Seeing Evelia remain silent, Helen also held her gaze without speaking.

From a distance, Natalie watched the two quietly staring at each other. She cautiously approached Helen’s side, ready to grab her friend and fly them both out the window at the first sign of trouble.

The stalemate continued awkwardly until the sky began to darken. Finally, Helen broke the silence, unable to hold back: “Miss Evelia, may I ask if you need something?”

Evelia tilted her head expressionlessly. “I assumed you were composing your thoughts. I was waiting for you to speak.”

Helen: “…”

Natalie: “…”

“You’re incredibly patient,” Helen remarked dryly. This was her first time interacting directly with Evelia. In her past life, Evelia had been defeated by top-tier players. As a minor player, Helen had never gotten near such high-level encounters.

Evelia leaned forward slightly, her voice soft and devoid of emotion. “You killed the werewolves. Why?”

“Because they were trying to kill us,” Helen answered plainly.

Evelia blinked, stepping back. “Thank you.”

“Huh?” This startled sound came not from Helen, but Natalie.

“Why thank us?” Helen asked, puzzled.

“You killed the werewolves, didn’t you? Or...did I misunderstand?” Evelia’s scarlet eyes reflected mild confusion.

“Wait, wait!” Helen struggled to keep up with the strange, oblivious girl. After considering his words carefully, he asked, “Did you come here intending to deal with these werewolves yourself? If yes, please nod.”

Evelia gave a small nod.

“Is your presence here related to the Blood Elves in the city?” Helen continued carefully.

Evelia’s expressionless mask finally cracked slightly, her mouth opening a fraction in surprise, but she again nodded silently.

“So, you suspect the Blood Elves too.” Helen took another step forward, stopping just in front of Evelia. “How about we join forces?”

Leo’s invitation had undoubtedly put Helen under the Blood Elves’ scrutiny. If she could secure an ally now, she’d gladly take the chance.

Currently, Helen and Natalie were weak at [Tier 1], facing an entire powerful cult. Their odds were as grim as a minor soccer team against a championship squad—maybe not a total blowout, but certainly nowhere near even.

“Join forces?” Evelia blinked again, puzzled. “You mean you want me to bite you?”

Tap, tap!

Natalie quickly stepped forward again, shielding Helen behind her. “I’m sorry, but Helen’s my little sister—I won’t let you bite her.”

“Little sister?” Evelia glanced curiously between Helen and Natalie, noting Natalie was taller.

“I’m not anyone’s little sister!” Helen protested indignantly, swiftly stepping around Natalie. “I mean—we should team up against the werewolves and the Blood Elves in the city.”

“It’s dangerous. You’re safer here,” Evelia said, turning toward the window.

“Dangerous, yes—but also an opportunity,” Helen replied quietly.

Evelia halted, turning her head slightly to gaze back at Helen. Her normally blank eyes held a hint of curiosity. “You seem intelligent. If you understand the danger, why not stay here? Why willingly seek trouble?”

“Then why didn’t you stay quietly in the countryside?” Helen retorted, a playful smile forming.

Evelia answered matter-of-factly, her voice unchanged. “Vampires cannot stay out of this. If we fail to act, we become scapegoats.”

“The culprits are the Ares family of the Blood Elves—your suspicion is correct.” Helen gingerly stepped around the blood on the floor, approaching Evelia with a graceful court curtsy. “Our goals align, so we’re valuable allies.”

Evelia’s eyes widened slightly, watching Helen’s elegant gesture. “Are you His Majesty’s illegitimate daughter? Your curtsy is more perfect than any noble’s I've ever seen—even etiquette tutors couldn’t match you.”

Helen almost stumbled. Is that really the point here?

Natalie, standing off to the side, couldn’t help muttering, “Please try to understand the main point of our conversation. Do you want to cooperate or not?”

“…You’re too weak. It’s dangerous,” Evelia said after a long pause.

Helen clasped her hands behind her back, tilting her head slightly. “We’re indeed weak alone—but together with you, we’ll all grow stronger.”

Evelia silently studied the pair, then slowly took two candies from her pocket, holding them out to Helen and Natalie.

Now it was Helen and Natalie’s turn to stare in confusion, utterly lost by this strange girl’s gesture.

“My mother said friendship starts by sharing candy. If we’re cooperating…can we be friends?”

As her words faded, a faint glimmer of hope broke through Evelia’s normally emotionless eyes.
