Excellent presentation until now I really didn't understand intervals. Rob. Made a lot of sense.

That makes sense. Ok. I got ya. Because right now it all seems random. And ive had some music theory learning piano. My teacher kinda would throw stuff at me, learning scales and stuff, but I never knew why. Now I understand. And for me it makes learning theory more applicable. Thank you for putting the missing link in place for me. Now I can move on. Bring on the THEORY !!!

No stupid questions. A short answer is that my knowledge of how music works is what allows me to quickly, and accurately learn all the songs and techniques that I teach on this channel. E.G I don't need to guess what chords are in a tune, because I already know what chords are in that key. Music theory also allows me to hang on to musical devices that I like and apply them to my own original music. Without music theory, everything seems random, when in actuality it's all very uniform, redundant and predictable.

Sounds good. You need to have your musical alphabet memorized, then learn your major scale, then memorize the note names in the major scale, over time in all 12 keys. Just so you know, this is suppose to be a gradual process.

Thanks for this, Rob. I know the scales and can call the notes (although not always very fast, especially descending). Now I'll go for the intervals. I like that "play it in your mind" technique too. I know, it all just takes time and patience is not my strong suit!

OK. Question, and this could be a stupid question, but, im a newbie and im just learning. Why does one need music theory??? I have taken piano and got a little bit of theory in my lessons, but, honestly, I just dont know why I need it.

Hey Dawn, be sure to take this very slow. First memorize the major scale pattern and get use to calling those notes by scale intervals 1-7. Get that to the point where you can play it in your mind, and visualize the scale as you look at the fretboard, the other intervals will be much easier to memorize.
