The Chrysler Corporation did not pursue the goal of creating an impressive “muscle car” to increase sales, it was entirely made so by the sport... and Bill Brownlee (chief designer of Dodge). In 1969, Dodge designers tried to improve the aerodynamics of the Charger body by adding some plastic fairings - this is how the Charger 500 appeared at NASCAR races and in showrooms.
But Ford, introducing its Torino Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler, and winning the races, proved everything Dodge design failure.
Dodge engineers again needed to go back to the drawing board, and as a result, the Daytona was born, which later brought fame to the brand and several speed records.
Such an unusual body kit, hung on a completely standard Dodge Charger R/T (Rapid Transit) body, significantly reduced its drag coefficient.
The Daytona's plastic nose was 18 inches (45 cm) long, and the unusual fairings on the front fenders were designed to create a vacuum behind the front wheels to better cool the brakes.
The rear wing appeared to stabilize the car at high speeds. Overall, the aerodynamics of the car body improved by almost 20 percent, but the car gained an extra 300 pounds, which did not prevent it from reaching fantastic speeds. At that time, aerodynamics was still poorly understood, which often led to unforgivable mistakes by engineers. So in the case of the Daytona, the two-foot wing (that is, higher than the roof of the car) began to work only at speeds over 150 km/h. Records rained down like from a cornucopia. At the Talladega super-speed oval in Alabama, the legendary Buddy Baker reached 200 mph (320 km/h) in a Daytona! Bobby Isaac, supported by sponsor K&K Insurnace, set a record speed on a closed track - 201.104 mph!
At the Daytona oval race in 1969, the first four places were in Dodge Daytona. At Bonneville Salt Lake, the same Isaac sets a new speed record of 217 mph. This was the glory time for the Dodge Daytona.
