Believing that full-size models would soon become a thing of the past, Chevrolet abandoned the Impala series in 1985, leaving only its older sister, the Caprice, in its lineup. But in the early 90s.

Large car sales are up again, and the Chevrolet Impala has a chance to make a comeback. In 1992, the Chevrolet Impala SS concept car, designed by designer John Moss, was presented at the Detroit Auto Show.

It was a Caprice sedan that featured a lower ride height, sport mirrors, custom wheels, a small rear spoiler, and a black grille with a Chevrolet badge. Two years later, it entered mass production almost unchanged,

only instead of the 8.2-liter V8 500 engine, a 5.7-liter V8 350 LT1, borrowed from the Corvette, was installed under the hood. The power of this engine was reduced from 275 to 260 hp. by replacing aluminum heads

with cast iron ones. Only one transmission was offered - a 4-speed automatic 4L60-E.

In fact, the Chevrolet Impala SS was a high-performance modification of the Chevrolet Caprice, equipped with a stiffened suspension, larger four-wheel disc brakes, an improved cooling system, dual exhaust,

a 3.08:1 limited-slip differential and 17-inch aluminum wheels with 255/50 ZR17 tires. The Chevrolet Caprice had almost the same equipment in the 9C1 police package, which is not available for sale. Inside,

the Impala SS featured leather-trimmed front bucket seats, a center console with cup holders, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The first 6303 cars produced in 1994 were only available in black with a gray interior.

In 1996, the digital instrument panel was replaced by an analogue one, and the automatic transmission selector moved from the steering column to the console.

The last full-size Chevrolet rolled off the assembly line at the Arlington, Texas, plant in December 1996.
