A pipe burst in her building, the water will be shut off for days. So she’s staying with me, and my giant teenagers, and my wiggly bad dog, and intermittent visits from my almost-ex-husband. A Valentine bonus. She’s helping me restore the dollhouse my grandfather made for me in 1982. She convinced one of the kids to watch The Last of Us with us, it’s been amazing, even though “mom closes her eyes for the gross parts”. She brings my other kiddo the fancy face scrub they like from her shaving kit subscription, thoughtfully spoiling each of us in small ways. She’s the first donor for the fundraiser I’ve launched. She keeps my house stocked with fancy coffee even though my almost-ex-husband is the only other person who would appreciate it (he really, really appreciates it). She’s my dogs’ favourite person, giving her special ear rubs that nobody else can seem to replicate. She stands with me in my chaos, with the covid tests and the lunches to make and the never ending laundry. She wakes me up at 5:30am on Valentines’ Day to take care of me, knowing it’s the only time all day that the house will be quiet. She buries her face between my legs and I sigh with pleasure, she snuggles me back to sleep afterwards, wakes me up a few hours later with a cup of tea. She brings me flowers with a little card that says simply “Love, Max”. She’s my Valentine every day.
