It’s funny how the universe works. Our ex’s sound like similar people. We were both taken advantage of. Our friends are relieved we are free. We were both so careful at first, slow to be vulnerable with each other, unsure about trusting our instincts.

“I know this sounds like such a low bar, but when you say things, I believe them, and I can’t tell you how good that feels.” I wish I could explain how my ex was so good with words but they meant nothing. Nothing means anything when you’re unstable. Promises that would never be honoured, revelations that would be forgotten, grand plans that would never be executed, he’d see the light over and over and then convince me to stay with him in the dark.

When she says “I’m in love with your decisions,” I get it. You don’t understand how important it is to respect someone’s choices until you’re connected to someone who is constantly sabotaging your lives together. It feels like a silly thing to appreciate but here we are. Stability feels good.

I let her take care of me, and she lets me take care of her. It feels healthy to have this kind of balance, switching of roles. I’m accustomed to doing too much work to make things work, she is too. This feels so easy for both of us, two lumberjacks passing the axe back and forth. It’s nice for a change.
