[Early Access] Hollow Knight - Episode 8

[Early Access] Hollow Knight - Episode 8

Comments

Yeah it's a shame. So many playthroughs I have watched got to Mantis Lords and through learning the dance really upped their movement skills and fell even more in love with the game. Sadly he encountered Quirrel after the first attempt who told him about the nailsmith leading him to assume the game wants you to level for that fight. He also already has a pale ore so they will die so fast. :(

Michael Foster

Why tho? Mantis is a starter boss. It’s like me trying to level up to fight index gundyr. But oh well I’ll enjoy mapo toying with the lords

Ivan Perez

I was mostly just poking fun, I realize the movement hasn't exactly "clicked" with you yet and the panic wasn't helping. When I was watching the Greenpath section, especially the part where you have to super dash to the pillar with spikes on top and above it I noticed something. On your third try you managed to jump up and away from the wall, go through the gap and attach to the other side all in one smooth motion. You were only able to replicate that move one more time and not as well before you later stated "that's the most challenging part of the whole run trying to curve around it" From that point on you instead use dash to either go through the gap or to get to the wall after the gap, its not as pretty but it works at the end of the day. This section just really stood out to me because the inputs needed for that maneuver are a tight circular motion and I felt that wouldn't feel good with a d-pad. Decided to be weird and reinstall Hollow Knight, ran over to that spot and gave it a go myself. I will preface this with the fact I haven't played Hollow Knight in over 6 months and all I did today was load up a previous save, take a stag to Greenpath and run to this spot. First try was 100% flawless using the analog stick, smooth as butter. I am not as used to the d-pad so I did a little warmup practice before my attempt, I was able to do it without dying but was far from flawless and just felt so clunky and unresponsive. Using a Wireless Xbox Pro controller for the record. I'm not saying someone can't beat the game with a d-pad obviously, I mean, people beat souls games using dance pads, and sure maybe it truly is the better option for some people but as someone with multiple save files with 112% completion and having experienced the level of movement capable and later required in particular parts of the game using the d-pad felt like being asked to play with some broken fingers, truly a sluggish feeling. Anyway sorry for another wall of text, you obviously have the right to play in the way that feels best for you, I just have a lot to say apparently. Loving the playthrough, looking forward for the next episode. Sincerely the guy who can't seem to not write an essay in the comment section of every episode.

You’re absolutely hitting a groove! Some really nice movement and Gorb was no trouble the 2nd time around! All the exploration and realizations is great!

Haha! To be fair to yourself you actually couldn't do the platforming section the first time you arrived since you didn't have the wall jump. It was only the second visit when you overlooked it

Max

He fought them once or twice but I think he is looking for the nailsmith to strengthen his nail before going back to them

Grelk

Did mapo fight the mantis lords or did he he miss that fight entirely?

Ivan Perez

Yes, I was specifically responding to his comment in the video because he stated "from the moment we saw hornet go this way we've been able to follow" and that wasn't quite accurate. Not disagreeing, just clarifying.

Another great episode. Mapo always has such cozy playthroughs 2D Aladdin was fantastic. I grew up quite similar except Nintendo only until I was a teenager

You can chalk up painful platforming to the fact that this is my first 2D platformer lol, it’s not a d-pad’s fault, I’m not going to be a pro right now 😂

He did go back and stand in front of it for a while after getting the claw, and yes I was gesturing wildly at the platform on my monitor whilst watching, haha. Tbh that’s more entertaining to me than someone who just always does the right things and doesn’t make mistakes. As it is, if he had thought about that platform and went that way he very likely wouldn’t have gotten the crystal heart this episode, maybe not even have found the mantis queens yet. It all works out in the end.

Jon Chapman

“What is this gauntlet of pain!?” -Mapo Everyone look away… hahaha

Todd

This is indeed the best episode so far. A lot of satisfying revelations for sure. Though when you were looking for the bench in the howling cliffs I was getting ready to jump through the screen and attack you before you noticed the bench pin lol. Some of the platforming in cliffs and green path was a bit painful but Imma blame that on the d-pad.

Michael Foster

Not when he first went there but he visited multiple times after Mantis claw but did not even register the floating landmass. I was worried he would just super dash and not realise what he missed but it was very satisfying!

Michael Foster

Also, you're being too hard on yourself. When Hornet yeeted across the bridge you didn't yet have the Mantis Claw; you had no way to follow at that moment!

Joe Chiavaroli

I can't even begin to describe how happy this episode makes me. There are so many moments in this game where one comes to realize how much effort and passion Team Cherry put into making this experience truly special, and I'll bet if you ask anyone what moments stand out to them you'll get a wide variety of answers and each answer for a different reason. For me, meeting Quirrel at that bench is one of the most memorable. The rain. The music. Realizing I had no idea how expansive the world in front of me was. This episode just has everything. The game shining the way that it can. Elements of the game clicking into place in your mind. New discoveries. The sprinkles on top being the Mapo experience.
