[Early Access] Hollow Knight - Episode 7

Ivan don't be rude please, there's nothing wrong with people having things to say, passion is what I'm about on my youtube channel and I like to foster that.

That took me about 5 minutes to type up. Are you really calling my mental state into question based on that? You? Someone who has decided to pay money to watch otherwise free videos of a man playing a game for an hour forty a few days early?

Michael Foster

Bruh your not right in the head to have wasted that much time typing that out

I think that’s true when there are obviously unexplored areas still, but when you’ve explored all the space and get stuck then it becomes confusing. Adventuring is fun only so long as you’re discovering new stuff. Once you’re retreading old ground again it quickly gets frustrating (for me, anyway).

Confusion about where you are supposed to go isnt a bad thing. it gives a feeling of adventure.

It is a small problem with the design of metroidvanias that if you don't remember places you were previously blocked at, or even if it doesn't click that you now have the abilities to get past a previously blocked route despite it being plain in front of you, that it can lead to a lot of spinning wheels and confusion about where you're supposed to go. Outer Wilds was a sort-of metroidvania in the sense that the powers you unlocked were knowledge about the world with which you could explore further, but their ships log system did an excellent job of hinting "Hey, you can do something here", and I think games like Hollow Knight would benefit from an equivalent system

Don't fret over missing things that may seem obvious in hindsight. Stumbling through the world of Hallownest is a unique experience for everyone. I've seen multiple playthroughs miss the Mantis Village switch the first time around. I've debated with myself about posting this next bit. My only intention is to be helpful; but I understand if this suggestion is seen as an overreach. You persevered navigating a treacherous and unforgiving area in the Crystal Peak. You made the decision to halt your progress and seek a stag station and/or spend your geo before committing to continuing. In this episode you seemed to indicate that you were blocked from further progress due to your current toolkit and didn't remember (maybe I'm wrong on that) that you made the decision not to continue. Maybe reviewing your previous episode for a few minutes before beginning again might help with that? It just felt as though you did yourself a disservice after overcoming adversity and had there not been an episode break at that point it wouldn't have occurred.

Personally, one of my favorite things about Hollow Knight playthroughs is seeing the different journey each player goes on since the game is so open so quickly. Really enjoying watching you go on your own journey -- even if it involves backtracking or going in circles sometimes. Just part of the game!

To piggy-back off this comment, I believe the Gravedigger you found in Dirtmouth is also a backer created character.

I feel like I need to preface this with the fact that while yes these videos can be frustrating I still look forward to every one of them. That said, I have watched many of your playthroughs including every single Fromsoft game. You can be really perceptive to the point where people have accused you of looking up info. When you play this game it feels like you have selective blindness. Like in this video you went to where Hornet zipped across and the 2 times you went there you didn't think to interact with the floating land just feet above. In the previous video ending you were progressing in the mines, no dead end, you decided to backtrack to look for a stag station when you were halfway through a room and then said idk what to do, you were literally doing it 2 minutes prior. I thought you might have had a stroke it was so jarring lol. A previous video you went through Fungal wastes, got to a point, opened your map that clearly showed multiple unchecked paths and said I guess this is all we can do right now and left the area. You learned to pogo off enemies you learned to pogo off terrain (bouncy mushrooms) but you didn't apply it to other things ,hint most sharp things, indestructible things/projectiles can be pogoed on. I've seen in other games as well that you can be quick to make assumptions with limited information such as finding out about the dash keybind prior to getting it leading you to assume a room is undoable even when you have the tools to do it. I am sorry about this wall of text and I want to reiterate this isn't meant to come from a place of negativity I've watched hundreds of hours of your playthroughs, your my favorite gaming YouTuber and Hollow Knight is my favourite game to watch. I think the combination of your iffy memory of locations and some tunnel vision is just making you a little blind occasionally. I feel like if you looked at a room or the map and took a moment to take it all in and think about what you could do, as opposed to assuming you can't do it would help a lot. I won't ever spoil anything but I will say don't overcomplicate things. You won't ever have to do something like go put a movement charm on to attack a floor. Again loving the playthrough, I make a fire in the middle of the night and sit in a recliner in front of it with the soft lighting of my Christmas tree in the background while watching your new video, it's the highlight of my day :)

Ahhhh The Mantis Lords! You found them!! Great Job, they are easily my favorite early game boss

Todd

Hollow Knight is an indie game that was funded through Kickstarter. The Grove of Spirits is a dedication to backers over a certain amount.
