Ani-May 2018 steps

I'll start posting more images like this, they might be helpful.  The standard approach for most illustrations is just lines -> base colors (on multiply layer) -> flatten and paint it out.

The base colors are most important, don't be afraid to go wild with them, lots of hue variations and experimentation.

When you mean multiply, do you mean the colors are on a multiply layer? wouldn't the colors darken/desaturate? Is the lineart/sketch layer on normal? And thanks for this! really helpful :D

That's kind of a tricky question. There's no one way to do things, the palette is always based on mood and lighting. The bare minimum might just be the standard light midtone orange tone and a stronger red to saturate darker tones. Once you're comfortable with constantly shifting the hue around slightly for every value, you can become more experimental. You can also then start looking at photos and trying to force yourself to make decisions on which parts look colder and which parts look warmer. Ah... there's a lot to this topic.. it's hard to sum up in words.

Can I ask a question here? If you had to narrow down the number of colors used for skin to the bare minimum, how many would you say, and what colors? I come from just drawing anime style stuff from childhood and never learned much beyond doing the most basic base color, shadow color, and highlight color method. I know this approach is very rudimentary and not good. Your skin paintings have maaannnyy colors to be as realistic and beautiful as possible but I find this intimidating and overwhelming to try. If you had to pick a very limited color palette to paint skin, which crayons would you give me?
