The car rolled to a stop outside the glittering prom venue, the soft glow of string lights reflecting off the windows. Mrs. Walker turned in her seat with a wide smile, her tone warm and cheerful as she addressed all the girls. “Alright, have fun, ladies! You all look so beautiful tonight.”
Melissa and her friends giggled, murmuring their thanks, but Gabriella stayed silent, her hands resting stiffly on her lap. The satiny material of her pink dress rustled slightly as she shifted, the layers of ruffles brushing against her legs. She could feel the weight of her long blonde hair tickling her shoulders, and her freshly glossed lips pressed into a nervous line.
Melissa gave him a pointed nudge, her voice low and firm. “You’d better get in character, Gabriella. Do you really want everyone here to figure out my step-dad is prancing around, posing as a teenage girl?” She leaned in closer, her smirk sharpening. “So, straighten up and remember—you’re not Greg tonight. You’re my little cousin, and you’re going to act like it.”
Greg swallowed hard and gave a hesitant nod. Melissa’s threat lingered in his mind as he forced himself to take a deep breath. He wasn’t Greg anymore. Not tonight. He couldn’t be. His fingers twitched, brushing against the hem of his dress, and with a deep sense of resignation, Gabriella stepped out of the car.
The cool night air sent a shiver up her spine, or maybe it was just nerves. Her heels clicked softly against the pavement as she followed Melissa and her friends up the steps to the venue. It felt surreal, like walking onto a stage in the wrong role, but Gabriella kept her chin up, her painted lashes fluttering nervously as they reached the door.
Inside, the venue was a blur of music, twinkling lights, and swirling dresses. Couples laughed and twirled across the dance floor, while others lingered by the snack tables or posed for pictures under the arch of balloons. Gabriella tried to stay close to Melissa, hoping to stay out of sight, but her pink dress shimmered under the lights, drawing far more attention than she wanted.
“Melissa!” a voice called out. Gabriella turned to see Derek, Melissa’s boyfriend, weaving through the crowd. He looked sharp in his tux, his confident grin making Gabriella’s stomach churn.
“Hey, babe!” Melissa greeted him with a kiss on the cheek before motioning to Gabriella. “This is my cousin, Gabriella. She’s visiting from out of town and thought prom would be fun.”
“Nice to meet you,” Derek said warmly, extending a hand.
Gabriella hesitated before taking it, her manicured fingers brushing against his. “Nice to… meet you too,” she managed, her voice soft and shy, hoping it sounded convincing.
Gabriella hesitated, unsure of what to say next, when Derek suddenly waved someone over. “Hey, Ryan! Come meet Gabriella.”
Ryan appeared moments later, tall and broad-shouldered, his easy smile making Gabriella feel impossibly small.
“Ryan’s date flaked,” Derek explained. “Maybe you two could keep each other company?”
Gabriella opened her mouth to protest, but Melissa cut in smoothly. “Oh, I think she’d love that,” she said, her grin as sharp as ever.
Ryan took her hand, his firm grip enveloping Gabriella’s soft fingers, her glossy pink nails a stark contrast against his rougher palm. Without a word, he led her onto the dance floor.
The night passed in a blur. Ryan twirled her expertly, held her chair when they sat for snacks, and made her laugh with cheesy jokes. By the final song, Gabriella had almost forgotten the nerves that had plagued her earlier.
As the last number swelled to its close, Ryan’s hands tightened on Gabriella’s waist, pulling her flush against him before guiding her into a deep, graceful dip. Her curls cascaded over her shoulder, her breath catching as his lips claimed hers. The kiss started soft but quickly deepened, his tongue brushing against hers with a slow, teasing rhythm that left her trembling. Gabriella’s glossy nails dug lightly into his jacket as a faint whimper escaped her lips, her chest rising and falling against his. Heat surged through her, her entire body melting under his control, the world around them vanishing into the electric pull of his touch.
“You’re amazing, Gabriella,” Ryan said, pulling her upright with a warm smile.
Blushing furiously, Gabriella mumbled a quick goodbye and hurried off to find Melissa, her heels clicking frantically against the polished floor. Melissa was waiting near the exit with a knowing smirk.
“Sooo,” Melissa teased, “did my little cousin enjoy her first kiss?”
“Melissa, stop,” Gabriella whined, her voice shaky as she tugged Melissa toward the door.
Melissa laughed. “What’s wrong? Sad Ryan didn’t take you back to his place? Maybe you were hoping to get laid?” she teased.
“Melissa!” Gabriella squeaked, her cheeks turning an even brighter red as she tugged harder. Her lips still tingled from the kiss, and she couldn’t help but wonder how she was supposed to go back to being Greg after this.
