Hi Ajay! Loved the reaction! About how Taylor was feeling writing castles crumbling in presumably 2010, she was receiving probably the most hate of her career at this time other than during the 1989 and reputation eras in my opinion. She was largely criticized in the public at this time for a number of things. People saying her songs are only about boyfriends, her surprised face at award shows, saying she doesn’t write her own songs, and being a bad singer after her 2010 Grammys performance where she did have a very poor performance. And I’m assuming she wrote this song after the Grammys 2010 maybe because she had just won album of the year and many Grammys and this is when people began the hate train saying she didn’t deserve it, hating on her surprised face, saying she doesn’t write her own songs, saying she’s a bad singer, etc. She was receiving her first storm of hate from the public and it was so uncalled for. I can’t imagine how that would make a 19 year old girl feel when it felt like critics and the public all hated her. Anyways, just wanted to let you know where castles crumbling likely came from. And this hate fueled Taylor to write speak now entirely by herself and she performed mean at the 2011 Grammys and got a standing ovation. A much better vocal performance there lol. I hope you’re well, as always ajay☺️

Great reaction Ajay. Speak Now song writing is so great. You may not read this, but remember what was going on when she wrote this album. Fearless had won AOTY and had really reached success, especially for a teenage country singer. Kanye interrupted her at the VMAs. So, there was song hate from Kanye fans, Beyonce fans, etc. Backlash came as the media were questioning whether she was really writing these songs or not. So Speak Now, right on the heals of Fearless success and backlash/hate she was experiencing at such a young age, was her answer to all of that and written completely by herself, to prove to the world she was writing the songs. the song Long Live isn’t about a romantic relationship, but a relationship with US, her fans. She was so young, writing her 3rd alum, still a teenager, and just then buying her first apartment. She had NO IDEA whether she would have another successful album or any success following Fearless. Long Live is a thank you to the fans. Of course Innocent is about forgiving Kanye for what he did to her. That incident, a global icon telling the world she didn’t belong, only made her more determined and if anyone questions why she seems like she has something to prove, they can go back to that moment. Already insecure, she then felt horrible. She thought all those boo-ing in that auditorium were boo-ing her. What does to the psyche of a teenager we will never know. And the backlash leads us into Castles Crumbling, how people starting hating her. People throw rocks at things that shine, a line from Ours, but a common theme she will use from this point on in her career talking about people/media throwing rocks at her (New Romantics, Mirrorball, The Archer, Call it what you want, Your on Your Own Kid, etc). That incident made such an impression, she has written about it for the rest of her career. Also, her label had a very big influence on her choice of songs. You are right about “I can see you”, her label was not allowing that song on the album. I know its off-brand for you, but its interesting to watch, Miss Americana. She discusses the incident and how it affected her. Also, discusses the second Kanye incident. I think the context of Speak Now is very important because it was written right after the VMAs, she had a lot of feelings. What a horrible thing to do to a young girl. Miss Americana is good, but all of what we see in the documentary, we are seeing in her song-writing from these lost Vault Tracks. It all makes complete sense.

Some fun facts/thoughts about some of the songs: First of, Taylor wrote all the songs on this album completely on her own between 18-20 years old. Sparks Fly is believed to be about country singer Jake Owen. Taylor actually wrote it when she was 16, before she released her self-titled debut album in 2006, and performed it live a few times (with some lyrical changes). Back to December is about Taylor Lautner (the werewolf from Twilight), whom she dated back in 2009 and starred with in the romcom Valentine's Day. The lyric "That September night, the first time you ever saw me cry" is in reference to the night Kanye interrupted Taylor's acceptance speech at the VMA's. Speak Now was inspired by a story of a friend of hers. Taylor actually wanted to name the album Enchanted but her label didn't agree. She settled on Speak Now because she felt it captured the album's essence,  with each song being a confession to different people. Dear John is about John Mayer, whom she dated when she was 19 and he was 32. John Mayer is known to be a very problematic player. He said the song "humiliated" him and called it cheap songwriting. His song Paper Doll is believed to be a response to this. Taylor recently asked fans to spread kindness and to not attack people online, whom they think might have wronged her. She was definitely referring to him. Mean was inspired by a critic who trashed her for apparently singing off-key at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Taylor got the last laugh because 2 years later she performed Mean at the Grammy's, changing the first line of the final chorus to "Someday, I'll be singing this at the Grammy's" and received a standing ovation. ICONIC. The Story of Us is also about John Mayer. The song references her awkward encounter with him at the CMT Awards. She wrote Never Grow Up to herself. Enchanted is about singer/songwriter Adam Young from Owl City, whom she had a crush on. Better Than Revenge is about actress Camilla Belle, whom Joe Jonas left her for after she appeared in a Jonas Brothers MV. He broke up with Taylor over the phone (the call lasted 27 seconds) and started dating Camilla. There is a lyric change. Taylor changed it from "She's better known for the things that she does on the mattress" to "He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches". She has said multiple times she regrets the original lyric because of the slut-shaming and pitting women against each other. She said "I was 18 when I wrote that. That's the age you are when you think someone can actually take your boyfriend. Then you grow up and realize no one can take someone from you if they don't want to leave." I know some fans don't like the change but it's only cuz we're used to it in a certain way. Personally, this just makes me respect her even more. Times change and Taylor is not the heartbroken 18 year old girl anymore. Also, while Taylor has written several songs about Joe, they are good friends now and she even sent him and his wife a gift when their daughter was born. Innocent is about Kanye. The line "32 and still growing up now" is in the original as she is talking about Kanye, who was 32 at the time. This was her way of forgiving him. That's why it's extra sad that he and Kim started publicly attacking her and making up lies about her. That's when she wrote Look What You Made Me Do on Reputation. Haunted is one of my favourites. I love the rock sound, the instruments and Taylor's earlier live performances of this song is a full on theatrical performance. It's so dramatic and I love it. Last Kiss is about Joe Jonas. "That July 9th" is a reference to that date in 2008 when Taylor went to see the Jonas Brothers perform in Dallas, Texas. Taylor recently said she thinks it's the saddest song she's ever written. Long Live is a love letter to her fans and her band/crew, most of whom have been with her since the beginning. When Emma Falls in Love is rumored to be about Emma Stone, one of Taylor's best friends. Sidenote: "When Emma falls apart and when she's alone, she takes on the pain and bears it on her own" hits hard. I Can See You has a music video which I recommend you check out. Taylor Lautner (her ex) stars alongside Joey King and Presley Cash in this video. Joey and Presley starred in the MV for Mean back when they were kids. During a concert at the Eras Tour the night the MV was released Taylor brought them out on stage. Taylor is now good friends with Taylor Lautner and his wife, who is also not only called Taylor but Taylor Lautner too since she took his name (maiden name is Dome). I know, it's confusing! Castles Crumbling feat. Hayley Williams is my personal favourite from the vault. It's so beautiful yet sad at the same time. The way Taylor sings "Never wanted you to hate me" is heartbreaking. Also "And here I sit alone behind walls of regret, falling down like promises that I never kept" 💔😭 It's at least partially about Kanye. “Used to chant my name, now they’re screaming that they hate me” hints at the moment people booed Kanye for stealing her moment at the VMA's 2009. In Taylor's Netflix documentary Miss Americana she said she thought the people were booing her. Timeless is about her grandparents. Taylor previously wrote about her grandmother, who was an opera singer, in the song Marjorie (her name) on Evermore. She was also inspired by her grandfather, a war veteran, in Epiphany on Folklore. Also, Fall Out Boy is a pop/rock/punk band known for songs like Dance Dance, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark and Centuries.

OKAY and now for some recommendations: I really think you should watch some of her music videos (especially those in the speak now era) and tour performances of these songs. That took me from liking to LOVING some of the songs. It’s also good to know that behind basically everything Taylor does is completely of her own mind/imagination. So the Speak Now tour was truly incredible and nearly everything you see comes down to Taylor. Now a non-taylor related request: RAYE’s 21st Century Blues album. It’s the best album i’ve heard in a long time and upon listening to it I immediately thought “Ajay would love this”

Okay just a few notes/fun facts about the album: Dear John (and of course Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve), Ours, Superman, and I Can See You are all (rumored) to be about the same person— just at different stages of the relationship. Take that as you will lol. This album is COMPLETELY solo written— no songwriters except her. This was partially in response to people doubting that she was actually writing her own songs. Speak Now the song is actually about Hayley Williams— yes the Hayley that was featured on Castles Crumbling. This was her first album to sell over a million copies in the first week. I know you were shocked that Taylor was receiving hate at around this time but she actually was receiving a considerable amount. Of course the Kanye incident, and then people doubting her songwriting abilities, and also this period of her career is when she was really on the country pop border. Her songs weren’t “country enough” to fans of country music, but they were “too country” for fans of pop music. A lot of people disliked her for this and just didn’t believe she was a genuine person. And lastly— Long Live is really an ode to her fans and her band. She talks about the “mountains they moved” together and how they went from being nobodies to “ruling the world”. She told this story using a Kingdom/fantasy analogy but also some of it was quite literal: “crowds and stands went wild”, “confetti falls to the ground”, “gave us trophies”. She basically is appreciating memories and thanking her fans and everyone by her side for being there for her and getting her where she is. It’s a beautiful song really.

My favorite from this album has to be Never Grow Up, just unlocked so many memories I forgot I had.
