- Been working on this for the past ... I'm not even sure lol, 2 weeks ... 1 week & 1/2 ... I think ? Well, in any case, the highpoly model for this asset is done.
- Being a fan of Black Lagoon, this is pretty much a pet project for me, so I've been going slower and a lot more carefully than normal. I really want to get these right, make them best I can and get 'em as accurate as possible (within reason of course, I don't want to take ages).
- I think at this point, this is pretty good, I looked at a lot of references and I replicated most of the main details. Jeans in general have pretty intricate seams/stitching and details in them, some which are pretty time consuming to replicate, but at the same time necessary, it's what gives them that iconic jeans look.
- Looking at the images, you might've noticed a big detail missing. These are supposed to be torn jeans and there aren't any tears on it. In the past, I'd have made that torn fabric at this stage and then bake it down to a low-poly model, but for this, I'm going to approach it differently.
I mentioned in the poll that I wanted to make some resources that I could reuse easily for future similar projects, so for the tears here, I'm going to treat it similar to how I do hair, make some hair (well fibers, tears, etc) cards and place them on the bottom part. I think the end result will be a lot more realistic and natural. Since those textures are going to be separate and not embedded in the main texture of the shorts, it should be very easy to reuse. Still, it's an experiment, I've never done it like this, so I'm not sure how it's going to come out.
- For the last image in this post, I was curios how the model would look and how close to photorealism it would be with something other than a simple grey material, so I quickly made a denim material and slapped it on. I'm not the best at vfx renders/lighting and materials (and by that I mean clueless :P ), the setup is simplistic, but it came out pretty close all things considering which tells me I did a good job on the model. The final thing won't look like that of course, this is not actually textured or even UVed, the material is projected/parametric, so don't treat it as a preview, but as a quick concept.
