"The Changeling" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2

Comments

Great reaction! Man, did you ever ask smart questions! You had no problem following that one. And I know you have seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, so this isn't a spoiler. Did you connect Kirk's comments at the end, regarding "My son, the Doctor?" How proud Kirk was! Of course, his son WAS the junior Dr Marcus in ST2. He might have even been born about this time. I always loved that connection. But let me take you back 57 years... It was Friday, September 29th, 1967, a mother in suburban Detroit let her 8-year-old son stay up past his 8:30 bedtime to watch her favorite show with her. It was the first airing of this episode, and I was fascinated. Who were these astronauts? What was this crazy space ship? Could something as terrifying as Nomad exist? It was the very first time I had ever seen such a thing! I had difficulty sleeping that night, and nightmares for a week. The folliwing Friday I asked my mother if I could watch "Star Track" again. We did, and she explained about the characters. Her favorite was Mr. Spock. And right from the first night I was hooked. I wanted to see every episode I could. The show aired on Fridays, so it wasn't a school night. I watched the reruns whenever I could, until my children were born in the 80s. Then I never seemed to have the time, and I had, after all, seen every episode multiple times. I saw all the movies, watched TNG regularly first-run, and got a few seasons into DS9 until work got too demanding and I drifted away. I came back to DS9 years later and completed the series. It is my favorite. I never got into Voyager - I watched them all one time and that was it. My love is for the first three series - TOS, TNG, and DS9. Bunny - I am really hoping you make it that far and that I live long enough to see all your reactions!

What I want? I personally don't give a shit about production or airdate and am ready to throw the whole damn thing out the window. :P

Too true. As a people pleaser, this has become quite stressful to me.

You'd think people would just be happy that I'm watching it at all. I expect as a first time viewer I wouldn't even notice small nuances in continuity from episode to episode anyway. I'd also be surprised if anyone watching this series watched the show in production order on their first time and many probably did not watch in airdate order perfectly either.

Thanks :)

We can say it till we are blue in the face. People (the YT comments specifically) will never chill.

"My son, the doctor" was a catch phrase parents in the 60s liked to coin. They would gush if their son/daughter was a doctor and it was a big deal.

I'm very late to the party due to being away, so I'll just touch on a few things. :) I really like this episode, it's up there for me. I always enjoyed living vs machine battles. I also agree that production vs release order really doesn't matter with Season 2 and 3. You watch them in whatever order you want. Regarding Uhura -- perhaps it just 'damaged' her brain? If we think of the brain as a kind of computer, NOMAD could have 'overloaded' the brain and therefore the memories are still there, but need to be 'fixed'. That would explain why she would default at times to Swahili, her native tongue. There is a great Star Trek arcade game from Sega which is a simulation against Klingons, but every now and then you also have to fight against a NOMAD and it's a tough enemy!

Yikes, sorry you’re getting grief on episode order. I was very impressed that you took time to decide what order to watch in. A lot can be learned from the production order on the first season of any series, as you can follow the creators learning and adapting to find ways to tell their stories. There is no β€˜wrong’ way. If someone has thoughts on how to watch, or preference's or order etc, that s a polite suggestion, not an absolute order. Kirk would have sent those redshirts back to the academy. Really enjoy your thoughtful reactions πŸ™

Any order is fine. And yes, it doesn't matter what you do, someone out there will complain.

Spock said that Nomad was over 500 kilograms, which is about 1100 pounds. That would be very difficult for Spock and Kirk to carry, so the writers came up with the anti-grav(ity) units so Nomad could be ushered to the Transporter. It became canon and we have seen those again later on.

Regarding episode order, a case could be made (I'm not suggesting it all) that a correct order would be when the episodes were conceived or written. Some third season episodes were actually first suggested early on in Star Trek's first year. So I simply say go with what work's for you. It would be interesting to explore it all in timeline order, from Star Trek Enterprise in the 2150's all the way to Star Trek Picard which ended at 2399 (so far) If I sat down for the ultimate long term binge I might try it that way. When TOS was remastered the opening was actually recreated. They used an orchestra and singer to perform the three season opens. That would make it a full stereo mix and up to current standards. Trivia: the picture you see of Jackson Roykirk on the screen during the briefing room discussion was Marc Daniels, the director of this episode. He is wearing Scotty's dress uniform.

Yes, Nomad "sterilized" itself due to being imperfect. Personally I think you should continue in production order since that is how it was shot. As for people's opinions they're like assholes, everyone has one and they usually stink. Just do what YOU want for a change. It's time to be a switch! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ As always πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦

At the risk of incurring Derek's wrath, I have to chime in on production order regarding the watching of original series episodes. While it's true that airdate order makes sense with TNG and every spin-off that followed, production order makes better sense with TOS. The production staff had no more say over the network schedule in the second season than the first, so I don't know where Bunny's source got that "information." While I hate to be suspicious of anyone's motives, I can only speculate that whoever prompted this change to airdates was hoping to see a particular favorite episode sooner than production order would allow. Which is terribly ironic to me personally, as the airdate order just skipped one of my favorites. Alas, there truly is no pleasing everybody.

The panels attached to Nomad before beaming it into space were their anti-grav units. Kirk mentioned them briefly. I was never really sure why they were needed either, but the wiki says they were used to reduce the weight of heavy objects to make them easier to carry. This is my dad's most quotable episode. He uses several lines as ringtones. "They're sending a mathematical message." "Captain, a message is coming in now." Regarding Uhura: I think the whole re-educating Uhura by next week's episode was a bit too much of a stretch, even for the future. I also thought her mind was wiped clean, like she was a child again. But apparently she still spoke Swahili. Hm.

These Trek videos always make my week. Thank you, Bunny! I believe Nomad DID destroy itself. Kirk gave it the command to do so before it was beamed out into space. Once out there it came to the conclusion that it was, indeed, in error and "sterilized" itself. When I first saw this episode as a kid during Star Trek's first run, I really liked the name Nomad for an Earth probe. It was at the height of the space race, and NASA ws always amazing us with ideas like that.

Everyone giving her grief over the watch order needs to just STFU. I watched the whole series as a kid in whatever random-ass order they came on my local channel in syndication, and somehow I survived. This series is episodic, not serial; the watch order just doesn't matter that much. Ya'll just chill. 😎
