I'm from there and while I don't hear people use the phrase I also kinda automatically understand it as "I've been through some shit and kept my head high" or "I've taken it on the chin," i.e. Bad shit has happened or been done to me and I pulled through also we should keep santos around as some kind of bizarro-stańczyk
