A lowered birthrate isn't necessarily an evil thing in itself, its just a number that we're able to look very closely at today compared to a hundred years ago when we didn't even know about it. We can still try to make policy to try to improve it. Looking at the root of why its low, examining, is a good thing. It will help us improve how likely a society is to survive long term. I don't like the idea of just letting it lay after finding it out.

People outside of the country don’t want to come here and have a dozen kids, not the least because of all the reasons outlined in the video. The quiverful movement is a documented Christian-Nationalist movement here, however. That’s what they’re addressing. Saying that other people are coming to this country to do the same thing though is just a racist dog whistle indistinguishable from Republican demands of closing the border.

2023-09-28 17:09:00 +0000 UTCIn no way am I going to defend anything that the US does regarding children/childbirth/schooling/bootstrapping. However, pointing to Finland's progressive policies in birthing as something that the US should emulate in an effort to combat our own population decline sort of rings hollow when you realize that Finland's birthrate is both lower and decreasing more quickly than ours. I think we have to accept that wealthy countries (and wealthy people) are just going to have fewer children, and consider what that's going to mean for the future of the planet.

When someone uses the "quiverfull" argument to have tons of kids and uses that as a weapon and you call it a bad thing to do that, thats great, I agree you shouldn't do that. But to make a claim that other cultures can't/won't/aren't doing that, that's short-sighted if you used it in an argument againt our USA culture. It can still be used as a weapon even if its wrong for people in our cultures to use it.
