2023-04-16 17:04:47 +0000 UTCThe Thoroughbred paid for a tiny fraction of my first year of college! My father worked in sales for Norfolk Southern and Norfolk & Western before it for decades. When I was headed to college (a few decades ago now) I got a National Merit Scholarship which was supposedly extremely prestigious—and because my dad worked for NS, they sponsored it so I got to fly out to Norfolk, meet and have lunch with executives in a little ceremony, etc. The scholarship was for $1500/year and I was going to Carnegie Mellon, which was $25,000/year then. They probably spent more flying us to Norfolk from Chicago and putting us up for a couple days than they paid in scholarship money.
