It's a mistake to interpret the initial disarray of the GOP House as incompetence. The fact is that this was a critical struggle between the super far-right faction (which is overwhelmingly composed of proxies for Charles Koch) and the "merely" far-right faction (which is almost entirely composed of weak proxies for Charles Koch). McCarthy's making unprecedented concessions to the extreme far-right is literally the entire party coming even more under the direct control of a handful of Libertarian billionaires who are aggressively hostile to even the concept of public organization. The fact that this happened at all is extremely disturbing. It is even more scary that it ended the way it did: the extremists successfully imposed their will on the entirety of half the American political system. We underestimate the danger of the GOP at our own peril.
