El Niño means countries on the western side of the Pacific are dry and the eastern side are wet. La Niña means the east side is dry and the west side is wet. La Niña three years in a row, as well as a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, mean that Australia has been unusually cold and wet for several years now. Our summers have been wet and miserable.
