I am also a Bernie supporter and I think most people are just pissed off when people lump us all together in one group. The MSM often uses the term Bernie Bros to talk about everyone even though we have a very diverse group of supporters. I am AFAB trans*, non-binary, disabled, nuerodivergent, super poor, and am a survivor of sexual assault. So to be lumped together with some of the worst people on the planet who are against literally every thing I am doesn't feel nice. We hate them too. They are a small minority, but they tend to be incredibly vocal and people in our group who aren't bros have issues differentiating themselves from them when they are angry. I have never dealt with more transphobia than I have while arguing with Hillary supporters in comment sections. I've been called a traitor to my gender for being trans AND for no voting for Hillary and now Warren. I like Bernie's policies best and I refuse to play identity politics while choosing a candidate. Warren is my second choice even while I'm still mad about the 'incident'. My reasons line up most closely with Cody's: she should have addressed how fucked up that question was, going against her as a politician has very little to do with her being a woman, she shouldn't have lost her temper a t the debate (hot mics/not shaking his hand) it was super unprofessional, and she shouldn't have used the BS question to launch some of her talking points. If you have watched the NH debate, a great example of deflecting a biased question while still managing to answer it fairly is the exchange about working with Bernie in the senate. Biden hugged Bernie and Klobuchar said she liked Bernie. With that clear she was able to talk about her record in the senate and get a talking point done. Very well done. Anyway, it is best to not throw around the term Bernie Bro. Because of our diverse coalition, the term can be sexist and transphobic. Most of us will come to your defence if that section of our group attacks people. Most of my energy is being directed towards two tasks: 1. Convince Bernie supporters to vote democrat no matter who wins and 2. Defend fellow marginalized people from the group of assholes in our group that most of us would chuck right into the sun. So yeah, I'm sorry you were mistreated. We can't seem to get rid of the fuckwads that keep attacking vulnerable groups of people. Just know that we wish we could get rid of them, and that one sure fire way to hurt their feelings (from personal experiences) is to tell them that Bernie would be incredibly disappointed in them and that my group's courteous behavior just proves that the vocal tiny minority that they belong are just a bunch of pathetic cowards. Because they are. They feat change and they fear the world that Bernie will bring about. One where they are treated just like anyone else. Feel better. I am sorry the shitcycles in the Bernie basement keeping hurting you. We will smoke them out eventually!

Hi, I'm a Bernie supporter too. There are so many responses I see from our camp that make me want to drag them off the internet by the ear and give them a stern talking to about how we treat other people in the world, ESPECIALLY if they are saying or doing sexist, racist, homophobic, classist things. Because it's not fair to you - to marginalized communities we want to fight for. To the individual members of those communities trying to get through their life. It doesn't help the coalition, or the cause. It's toxic, divisive, and dangerous, and frankly, the Democratic party is doing a fine job of that without anyone's help. Beyond the strategic issues, it's bad??? to be cruel???? to marginalized people???? I'm sorry about the individual experiences that you have had with Bernie's supporters. I hope that along with the next election (which, certainly, I hope Bernie wins), that there is more space for kindness for people outside our own communities, that there's a stronger pursuit of justice: racial, economic, sex, across all aspects of society. That change doesn't stop with the campaign and the election, but we continue to push for our shared values and the dignity of all people. I'm sorry about your individual experiences with the Bernie Bros, and what a lot of online women, POC, and others have reported anecdotally. I hope that we, as a community behind a candidate, can step up and resolve these serious problems. I'll take the individual actions that I can, and always listen for how I can be a better ally to other marginalized and disenfranchised folks, and the the cause at large.

Hey Katie between this episode and worst year ever. I decided to write a comment you likely won't see, but I hear you. you're not wrong . your feelings are absolutely valid and matter. it's beyond ridiculous that you're experiencing this.

Honestly, there isn't much anyone can do, but putting the spotlight on it helps bring everyone together, I think. There's almost too much to digest on the subject, imo. In the end though, I don't think (and hope) it won't wind up being that big of an issue. From someone sort of on the outside, it's just concerning. If you're a part of a marginalized group, on the left, sometimes you get the feeling that you are only needed for your vote and support. The first time I heard about Bernie Sanders was on reddit, and it was in a thread where angry people were bashing BLM because some BLM protester took the stage. Bernie himself handled it well, but his supporters were more or less angry and kinda racist about it. I went to one of his rallies in 2016 (the only campaign I attended a rally too, and the only campaign I donated for). My partner and I were picked out of the crowd to be one of those folks who sits behind him when he does his speech. He was really good. Afterwards some friends pointed out that, his staff may have picked my partner and I for optics, particularly because we lived in a southern state. Personally, I was fine with it, but it seemed funny at the time. I guess if I was to try and tie a bunch of (unasked for) commentary together, I'd point to what happened during and after the Obama campaign. Like, a lot of liberals congratulated themselves for solving racism, while then perpetuating racist ideology. I don't think Bernie himself is a racist, or sexist, or transphobe. I think that's quite obvious. But a single figure can't solve everything. There is no such thing as great man history. So when the bros pop up, it just reminds you that, even if you elect Bernie things won't get better for you, because you don't get a say. Because the things that you see or experience aren't real. On the other hand, if more of us come together, and not chastise or chase out Bernie Bros (because that never works), but just admit that they're there, and something of a problem, then we open the space a bit. Maybe it'll feel less like "we'll congratulate ourselves for solving racism/sexism/transphobia by electing Bernie, and we'll keep doing those things" and more like "these are still real issues, but since we all can acknowledge them we'll get through it". I dunno, trying not to sound polyanna or anything. Honestly, it's a lot to think about. Really with the About Race podcast was still around too.

Hi, I'm a Bernie supporter. The Bernie Bro thing is real, and it's a problem. I'm not really sure what to do about it, but it is definitely a thing.

I was going to post something the day this came out, but decided against it. A week has passed, and I changed my mind. I was going to make a long post about how I, as a non-white non-straight human being, have experienced what everyone calls Bernie Bros. If it comes down to it, sure, I'll vote for Bernie. And I don't think the rhetoric you often see from Bernie Bros reflects him. I just am unsure of how I feel when, people consistently point out "look, this shit right here, that's Bernie Bros shit" and it immediately gets shot down. The only talk about Bernie Bros behavior is either "look, it's real" or "fake news!" Maybe if a single Bernie supporter could just admit that, maybe, it's a problem? That'd be nice? Instead of telling people like myself or Katy that we're just crazy. Maybe just a pinch of foresight might reveal that those words in that configuration to this kind of concern is counter-intuitive? What am I saying, I just need to scroll back up to the comments to know my answer.
