Because the core tenet of sedevacantism is that Pope Pius XII was the last legitimate pope and every one to come after that is a pretender, because gasp shock awe even the barest amount of 1960s "modernity" (aka Vatican II) was too much for them. And just in case you think I'm talking about some fringe movement of scattered individuals of no influence or import, one of the most prominent sedevacantists is Hutton Gibson, a professional conspiracy theorist and anti-Semite who — and this may explain a LOT about the person I'm about to name — is Mel Gibson's father. No, really. (I can't take credit for this knowledge, alas; that was pointed out by someone in the comments to Renegade Cut's video on The Passion of the Christ.)
