Hi. It's the first episode of Some More Books! - "The Power" with Katie Willert

In our very first episode of Some More Books we are joined by actress, comedian, writer, producer and friend Katie Willert to discuss Naomi Alderman’s The Power - which you should know if you’ve done your homework and read the book like I asked.

We got to as many of your responses as possible without repeating ourselves too much. But if we didn’t address one of your points let me know! I’ll be reading and replying.

If you do the book club again I want to nominate Lightning Rods by Helen DeWitt. Cos it's a very strange book - I'd love to hear other people try and make sense of it.

Great listening to your insights, my interpretation of Tunde was that he was pretty much always in it for the money/fame, even when he was saying he was on the women's side, it always seemed to be able to get the inside scoop. Now that's not to say I didn't think he was sympathetic to the women's movement in the story - but I definitely got the "I'm gonna be so rich" vibe from his character. For Allie/Eve, my interpretation when we first see her was that her inner voice was some sort of Schizophrenia and that her character would be the main Antagonist. I was relieved this wasn't the case because that would have been some lazy writing. Love the bookclub, keep up the great work!

Respectfully disagree that it is necessarily sexist to think that reversing the power dynamic wouldn't completely swap men and women's behavior. There is quite a lot of legitimate science showing the impacts of hormones on behavior, and testosterone makes people more aggressive and impulsive. Anecdotally, if you talk to trans men who take hormone therapy, the reactions I've heard when they first start taking test supplements is "holy shit, this is intense". If women had more power, but had no change in hormone balance, they would react differently than men. There would for sure be women who did terrible things, everyone is just people. I just think it would be interesting to see a power dynamic swap with that biology taken into account.

Loved it! Re: Energy healing. No judgements! I can get overly picky about sci-fi (or anything, tbh). +1 for deadlines. Hopefully I'm more concise next time.

Great listening to this episode and hearing your and other readers’ perspectives. Look forward to the next one :) let us know the date - it was helpful having a deadline.
