i think mest's guilt comes from feeling like the reason she "died" (since in his mind he thinks the island was destroyed 7 yrs ago) bc since he was infiltrating the guild for S class trials and chose Wendy as his partner, he feels like he got her "killed". and not a jab at the rest of the people there but because shes so young, hes like "i killed a child o-o"
