On the note of Lucy being the Damsel in distress, it's a valid interpretation to say that Lucy is the show's main character. She easily has the most character progression, and it's important to remember that she has only just become a professional wizard. She is very much at the beginning of her career while Natsu has been doing it long enough to be known by epithet. But Lucy is learning from one of the best guilds in the country and is determined to earn her place. :)
