I'm glad you seemed to like the show a little, it gets really good when they get more into not just finding the sunken world but also discovering and exploring things in deepest parts of the ocean. There is a lot of character development throughout the three seasons, as well as meeting new enemies and allies. Also the dads grandparents started a marine life protection company, like a rescue foundation for new or endangered sea animals. And the mom is a very accomplished marine biologist so, no they aren't using any government funds, they are just very rich.
