Even in the 99 anime they didn't have much filler in this part. Part of the 99 anime's first episode actually addresses Gon's ability with animals, also it wasn't even filler it was just the scene they forgot to put in. It also made it necessary to add the whole Mr. Satotz overhearing Gon and them mentioning Ging part. In the manga and the 99 anime Gon has Ging's Hunter license it was given to him by Kite, Ging's apprentice when he saved Gon from a wild bear by killing the bear, and she had a cub and Gon ends up raising the cub and Kite gives Gon his father's Hunter License. So what Gon ends up doing is asking Mr. Satotz about Ging and that's where he almost accidently reveals the real Hunter exam isn't quite over yet.
