“WOOOOOOOOAH!!! OOOOF!!!”
Unlike her previous fall, Crissie’s trip to the bottom of the rabbit hole was far shorter. Landing with an audible squish, she instantly recognized what she had landed on even before her eyes had time to adjust to the dim cave. “Dirty diapers, huh? I should’ve known,” she said, struggling to push herself upward amongst a sea of filthy padding. She snickered as she recalled that this was only the second time she’d landed in a pile of used nappies. Though, unlike the first time, these stinkers were the real deal. Part of her wondered who could be dumping their diapers here but she decided not to dwell on that question for too long and instead focused on her next move.
Looking up, Crissie could see that even though the hole was only about ten feet deep, there was no way she’d be able to climb back up due to its harsh vertical incline. Forward was the only way onward. Crawling across the bed of squelchy plastic, she was finally able to reach solid ground. Unfortunately, solid did not mean dry as the entire tunnel was a muddy mess. She did her best to avoid dragging her dress on the ground as she got to her feet and began making her way through the mysterious cavern.
Inching through the maze of narrow passages, Crissie began to worry if she had made a mistake coming down here. That was until she noticed the tunnel brightening as she spotted an opening at its end. Believing she was nearing an exit from the underground system, she picked up the pace and ran toward the light.
However, as Crissie arrived at the end of the tunnel, she found that it opened up into a giant room filled with strange, glowing mushrooms that were so bright, they practically mimicked daylight. They weren’t just any mushrooms either as they ranged from the size of a basketball to as big as a shed.
While the neon mushrooms were certainly a sight to behold, it was what Crissie smelled that captured her attention. A soft haze filled the massive chamber layered with the scent of cannabis. Toddling through the forest of fungi, she followed her nose toward the source of the smoke, feeling the makings of contact high coming on all the while. It wasn’t long before her brain was foggy enough that the chanterelles and toadstools that decorated the vast landscape began to blur together, leaving her hopelessly lost.
“Who are you?”
“Gah!” Crissie jumped as she suddenly heard a soft, masculine voice echoing throughout the expansive room. She frantically looked all around her, discovering no one in sight, “Um…hello?”
“Your name is Um Hello? Quite unusual,” said the voice, his words slow and slightly slurred. Before Crissie could correct the voice, the mushroom next to her began to shift as a large, blue being peered over its edge at her, “Tell me, Um Hello, how does one become a butterfly?”
Staring up at the blue figure inquisitively, Crissie stammered to answer, “I-I um…I’m not really sure. I think it’s just a matter of time.”
“A matter of time, you say,” said the voice, pondering intently over Crissie’s answer, “But time cannot change so much as we change in time. For if time were the true catalyst for change, we’d have no time at all. Come, join me and we’ll discuss this further.”
Suddenly, the ground beneath the mushroom began to shake as three more mushrooms of ascending size sprouted up from the ground, providing a staircase for Crissie to climb. Puzzled by both the odd line of questioning as well as the sporadic mushroom growth, she wasn’t certain if she should allow her curiosity to get the better of her on this or not. Though having wandered aimlessly throughout the wide array of glowing fungi, she figured it was probably in her best interest to ask for directions. Shaking off the red flags this person was giving her, she quickly scaled the trio of mushrooms.
Surprisingly, as Crissie arrived at the top, she discovered that the source of the voice was no person. Instead, she found a massive, stuffed caterpillar who stood at least twice as tall as she was. Her mouth dropped as she stared up at him, her mind racing to try to pass off what she was seeing as a symptom of her contact high. Sadly, unless what was in the plush caterpillar’s hookah was laced with LSD, there wasn’t enough weed in the world to hallucinate something as bizarre as this.
“Sit with me, Um, and explain yourself,” said the Caterpillar as he placed his lips around the mouthpiece of his hookah.
Shaking her head, Crissie did her best to clear the smoke that lingered between her ears. “Well, for starters, my name is Crissie, not Um. And what do you mean by ‘explain myself?’” she asked, taking a seat on her padded rump across from the talking stuffy. She wiggled her butt slightly as she did, finding the top of the mushroom to be quite comfortable.
“Your name is Crissie Hello?” said the Caterpillar, turning his head sideways as he continued to gaze upon Crissie through a pair of bloodshot eyes, “Humans do have such odd names. I suppose I’m not one to judge. Now then, do you perhaps know why you are unable to explain yourself?”
Disregarding the fact that the caterpillar still didn’t have her name fully correct, Crissie responded, “Well, it would help if you’d tell me what I’m supposed to be explaining. Like why I’m here or how I got here? What are you trying to know?”
“My dear, how might you expect someone else to explain ‘you’ if you cannot explain yourself,” said the Caterpillar, blowing a puff of smoke directly into Crissie’s face, “Here, breathe from my pipe. It will help you to open your mind.” He offered forward the mouthpiece to Crissie as a kind smile slowly spread across his face.
