For the other players still in the game, Lenny’s failure was their success. Once everyone had progressed one space forward, the equation shifted again, this time getting exponential with the screen displaying 32.
The group inched its way forward yet again, with Seven crossing the finish line first. Lance and Brett soon joined him, collapsing on the platform in safety. For Aaron, the correct answer of nine provided him with more than enough spaces to join his competitors in the winner’s circle. Part of him wanted to continue skipping spaces and rush his way to the end, but he also didn’t want to risk losing his footing when he was so close to making it. Pacing himself back down to one space at a time, he took his time and made sure that nothing could go wrong before he propelled himself forward.
At last, Aaron was standing only two spaces away from the end. Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t resist forgoing the last few spaces and diving for the final platform. Compared to some of the jumps he had made, it was easily clearable. He launched himself forward and to the side, slamming down on the hard surface in victory. It wasn’t the most graceful of landings by any stretch, but it didn’t matter. As the vibrator in his diaper came to a stop, he knew he’d held onto the last vestiges of his adulthood, at least for another round.
“Congratulations, cutie! You’ve survived round two,” said Dom as she stood over Aaron’s body with a smile forced upon her face. Despite the cheerful demeanor she was fronting, inside she was freaking out as half of the remaining contestants had finished without one slip-up. Meanwhile, the other half were closing in on their own finishes. It was safe to say that round 2 was a complete disaster!
With his eyes barely open, Aaron spotted the timer above him, seeing that they’d made it with only six minutes to spare. It was a long and arduous battle, but he’d managed to survive the second round. A soft, shaky smile formed on his face, proud for not only winning but for also managing to not faceplant in the mud even once.
Taking giant leaps of three spaces at a time, the other four players still standing on their beams got within striking range of the winning platform. It was close but Rod found himself six spaces short of the finish. He sighed, reminding himself to hold on for just a bit longer. About a dozen or so spaces behind him was Natalie, who looked as though she might pass out at any moment.
“This is for you, Lenny!” screamed Shawn as he dove for the finish line, earning his safety. He stood up and looked back at his friend, the two of them sharing one final look.
The only person left to finish their moves was Lee, who was only two spaces away from the end. If he jumped, he could clear the remaining spaces and reach the end easily in the same way that Aaron did. However, just as he was about to leap forward, he turned his head back to see Rod, who was only three spaces behind him, and Natalie, who had about a dozen left to go herself.
“You’ve almost got it, Lee!” cheered Aaron half-heartedly, still catching his breath after such a strenuous exercise. Nevertheless, he was still feeling ecstatic that between their four alliance members, all of them were so close to moving on.
Unfortunately for Aaron, Lee’s mindset was somewhere very different. Looking up at the clock, they casually watched as the time remaining dipped below five minutes. “As long as I don’t take my last step, the next equation won’t show up, right Dom?” they said, with a crooked smile appearing on their face.
“That is correct,” said Dom, who after hearing Lee’s question, formed a smile on her face that was nearly identical to his. In order to salvage this round, she was in desperate need of a miracle. Thanks to Lee, she now had that miracle, “You’re allowed to take as long as you need to move. Only once everyone has progressed the allotted number of spaces can the equation refresh.”
Confused, Aaron found himself frantically swiveling his head between Lee and Dom. He quickly got up and rushed over to where Lee was stationed, saying, “Lee, what are you doing? All you have to do is-”
“Honestly, Aaron, just shut up,” said Lee, their true colors finally starting to blossom, “You should be thanking me. I’m doing us both a favor by increasing our odds from 1 in 8 to 1 in 6, as well as taking care of perhaps the biggest threat to everyone’s game.” They turned back again, fixing their eyes directly at Natalie.”
Natalie remained silent as her leg quivered in pain, with every muscle burning to the point where it was unbearable. There was no point in arguing. She knew that Lee was right, and if she was in his position, she might even do the same.
Joining Aaron in front of Lee’s beam, Lance could only shake his head. “You’re a selfish bastard, Lee…but you do have a point,” he said, placing his hand on Aaron’s shoulder, “You’re gonna have to get over this stupid crush of yours. Do you know how many bodies Natalie has buried? We have a chance to take her out right here and now and we’re not going to lose that for your fucking puppy love.”
“Oh, fuck off, Lance,” said Aaron, pushing Lance’s hand off of him, “And it’s not fucking puppy love. She deserves a fair shot like everyone else, same as Rod.”
Nodding in agreement, Rod's desperation was finally rearing its ugly head. “C’mon dude, we’re supposed to be allies here,” he said, waving his arms around as he nearly lost his balance.
“Allies? Last time I checked, this wasn’t a team game,” said Lee, dropping his cocky attitude for an icy-cold one, “Only one of us is going to win this. I’m not here to play friendship is magic with you assholes. You wanna stay in the game, go ahead and jump.”
Staring blankly at the platform that was five spaces away from him, Rod wasn’t confident that he was going to clear that much of a distance. However, as his eyes drifted upward to see that only two minutes were remaining, the panic of being stranded on the beam was taking its toll. Lowering his stance, he began to swing his arms, preparing to make the jump. With one giant lunge, he launched himself off of the beam and collided with the edge of the platform. Clawing at the flat surface with his chest and legs dangling off of the edge, he could slowly feel his grip starting to slip.
Aaron lurched toward Rod in the hopes of grabbing onto him and helping him up to the platform. Unfortunately, he was stopped by Dom, who held her hand up to him and said, “Interfering with another contestant will result in immediate disqualification.” As much as Aaron wanted to help, he was helpless to do anything beyond watching in horror.
“N-NO! PLEASE! SOMEONE HELP ME!” shrieked Rod as he tried to pull himself upward to no avail. There was just nothing for him to grab onto. As he attempted to swing his leg up over the ledge, he lost the support of the arm that was holding him stable and flew backward into the mud with an obnoxiously loud *SPLAT!* Screaming at the top of his lungs, Rod broke into hysterics, unable to cope with the fact that he was going to be stuck as a Baby Slave for the rest of his life.
None of the other players could stand to look at each other as they listened to Rod’s crying. Even Lee’s composure was crumbling a bit as they now had to live with what they had done. Inhaling sharply, they shoved their guilt down deep and returned to their stony expression.
“One minute left!” said Dom, who was unsurprisingly the only person in high spirits. The big boys upstairs had to be loving this. The betrayal, the devastation, it was almost too good to be true.
As they watched the seconds tick by, Lee readied himself to make the final jump. If he timed it just right, he could leave Natalie with as little as one second, effectively ending her game. As he repositioned his stance, though, his eyes fell upon Rod. It was only a brief glance that was no longer than a second, but it was enough. Seeing him writhing and wallowing in self-pity was gnawing away at his soul.
Meanwhile, Aaron had given up on trying to convince Lee and had instead traveled over to Natalie’s hopscotch beam. “I’m so sorry, Natalie. I wish there was more I could-”
“It’s alright, Aaron. You did everything you could and I can’t ask for more than that,” said Natalie in a surprisingly calm tone, “Thank you, by the way.”
Confused, Aaron responded, “For what?”
“For not judging me at first glance like the others,” said Natalie, a soft, unsteady smile forming in the corners of her lips, “For making me feel just a little bit normal for once.”
“15 seconds remaining!” shouted Dom, before beginning to count backward, “...14, 13, 12, 11…”
It was almost time for Lee to make their jump. Swinging their arms back to prepare their momentum, they snuck one last parting look at Rod as if paying their final respects. However, that moment of stolen focus was all that was needed to unbalance them. Shuffling their foot in an attempt to stabilize themself, they found themselves in an incredibly awkward position. As they felt themselves tip past the point of no return, they were forced to push off from the platform early, landing heavily on the platform with only six seconds left on the clock.
In an instant, the equation shifted one last time. Natalie didn’t even bother to look at it. There was no time to waste on solving the problem. If she was going to make it, she had to run now! Propelling herself forward onto her bad ankle, she grunted through the pain as she jumped four squares at a time in a mad dash for the finish line.
“...3, 2, 1…”
Landing six spaces away from the finish, Natalie didn’t have the luxury of getting any closer. Angling her momentum to the side of the hopscotch beam, she threw herself forward, crashing into the edge of the platform much like Rod had before her. Luckily for her, she was considerably lighter and more limber than Rod was. Swinging her injured leg up onto the platform, she cried out in pain as she muscled her body upward, rolling onto the winning platform at the very last second.
Aaron quickly rushed to her side, falling to the floor next to her as she went completely limp. “Natalie! You’re okay, you did it! You’re safe,” he said, holding back joyful, exasperated tears. The others could only look on in shock and awe at the miracle that Natalie had been gifted.
“What an amazing finish!” yelled Dom jubilantly, “And with that thrilling conclusion, round 2 has officially come to a close!”
