Haikyuu is so much more about the human spirit and what I means to be apart of a community of people than anything about volleyball which is why so many people love it. It's easy to feel a connection with every character and team because we all see small parts of ourselves in them. Truly top tier writing, characters and story telling.

Basically, his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, so for his nickname they combine the two to be "Ushiwaka" Bit of trivia, that nickname is a reference to a historical figure (also popular in Japanese literature) named Minamoto no Yoshitsune whose similar nickname "Ushiwakamaru" means "young bull."
