You are correct. He's average by our worlds standard which would make him ugly by the goddess's world standards. Now why he's average when his mom, dad and sisters are beautiful is hinted at in the WN extra chapters in case you want to go and see for yourself. :)

Luria (the waitress) looks to be about 16-18 years old at this point in time, which means that the nobles insulted her for not going to battle against the demons as an 8-year-old. The general statement that nobles should fight and - if need be - die to protect their populace is well established, there's even a term for the obligations that nobility have: "Nobless Oblige". Projecting this onto a teenager because they didn't sacrifice themselves when they were a small child is where I think these guys overstepped, though. On that note, not sure whether you guys realised it, but those asshole nobles were part of Illumgand's troop for the group battles. They were all killed by him when he consumed their bodies. Fitting end for them, honestly.

But it's no wonder why they thought the stakes were so low when this mutated demon student patiently stood around for 10min while everyone monologued. No wonder the King and nobles didn't even have bodyguards the entire event, they knew they could just yap their way outta any fight. It was at this pt in the series where the Kuzunoha edging was starting to hurt; man's just needs to pop off already. Thankfully it gets better
