Bimbo University Glow Up - before

A few weeks ago I ran into this piece by tamimoon on Twitter and it really struck me. It reminded me of my first Bimbo University piece but, where I had drawn a very "active" scene, theirs is a much more naturalistic group portrait.
I fell in love with it. Tamimoon has captured the essence of teenage awkwardness with the reserved poses and oversized outfits and it's great to see how each character blossoms out of it in their own way. I also love how they grow closer as a group (both literally and figuratively). I just had to make my own version.
It ended up being a lot more work than I expected, especially the second part. I don't think I've ever used as much reference material for a single piece, before. Between designing the outfits, figuring out the poses, and making sure it all fits together, this turned out to be one of the most demanding pieces I've worked on, recently, which is why I'm splitting it into two posts. It'll give me some more time to polish the "after", as well.
I assigned each of our future graduates an archetype to give them all distinct flavors. These were: goth, pink, slutty, sporty, and trophy. See if you can guess which one is which!

2022-01-29 10:49:44 +0000 UTCOkay, here are my guesses in full. A lot depends on whether the transformations are opposite of their existing personalities or leaning into said personalities. This is setup so either is possible, but I'm guessing opposites. From left to right: 1. The blonde guy is a bit macho, so I'm thinking pink. 2. This girl is plain and prim/proper, so slutty would be a big change (though goth would go with her pale skin). 3. Not so plain, but also prim & proper - goth or slutty, though I think goth more likely. 4. She's a visibly awkward and shy about her picture (more than the other girls), so totally trophy. 5. He's a bit hipster or effeminate, so sporty would be a big change (also sporty being next to trophy totally fits)
