The weird faces in the first episode is one of two things: The "B" team was animating this one. Shows often have two different teams animating their episodes, an A team and a B team. Sometimes the B team does a bad job. Or, and this is my guess, there's a lot of action in this episode and they ended up spending less time on the animation for the faces. Or it could be a deliberate choice, but I doubt they'd decide to make a weird choice like that unless it feeds into the plot.
