oh, I'm going to age myself - as I caught the tail end of the beeper era in middle school. we definitely would communicate to each other just using numbers - we could even spell out full sentences in digits. the pre-texting era was very inefficient. for the korean pager language questions - it was definitely a mix. some were based on the shapes of the numbers resembling korean letters, some were based on the pronunciation resembling korean words or sounds.
