Sinister Benefactors: The 3rd ever hang is TONIGHT!

Comments

Finally got around to watching it, having someone else worked really well I think.

Ted Brown

Great hang yesterday! Had a blast. It was a lot of fun.

William Rigby

Couldn't make it due to work but watched afterwards and it was lots of fun - having Rob with you was great, your back and forth was both entertaining and enlightening

Dwayne McDonald

That was a great hang. Looking forward to the next.

I might miss this one. :( But here's my current theory for helping players get over the Character Generation barrier of entry: I quite like to apply something similar to the "Quantum Character" theory proposed by Luka Rejec in play: https://www.wizardthieffighter.com/2019/quantum-characters-and-the-tabletop-role-playing-game/ The summary of which is: Character generation over time, through play. A character starts as a ‘quantum character,’ barely defined beyond a name and a couple seed ideas like "Wildstar Wrangler" and "Good at explosions" and "Wants to redeem themself", and as they interact with the world, they generate themselves more fully, solidifying what exactly those seeds mean and how they connect with the world. Over several sessions they become fully fleshed out, and nobody has to write (or listen to) a 3-page backstory up front since it’s generated through play, together. To pull this off, players need to be fans of each other's characters. So to help I'll often give each player a specific secret mission like "find out a secret about another character" for the session with a small reward if they succeed (usually candy...). I have found it takes the initial load off my players, gets them playing faster, and gets them excited to discover each other's characters through interaction. Thank you for attending my nerdy TED talk.

I'm probably not going to make the hang out but I wanted to share my success story. My original exposure to ttrpgs was DnD and I mostly hated it because I felt like I was just solving computational problems instead of playing a game. I was inspired by your original video on getting into ttrpgs as I had no idea there were other types of games besides dnd. I've read multiple books and had several failed attempts at gm-ing. Recently I started putting a huge effort into learning how to play Blades in the Dark. It was more complicated than I expected but I pushed through and I have now successfully gm-ed three sessions. For better and worse my play group is my kids, ages 9, 11, 13, 15. I still completely suck at running a session but it has been an absolute blast. In our most recent session, they were trying to break into this formal ball to steal an artifact that was on display and my 13 year old decided to sneak in as a janitor and he started throwing fish at all the fancy guests. It was totally unexpected and everyone thought it was hilarious and it led to some unexpected turns in the story. Thanks for your work! I feel my confidence and skill slowly building!
