I’m a member of the Long Beach Ink ‘N Drink monthly meetup, where local artists jam on tables at an arts bar called Supply + Demand. They have run successful kickstarters for comics anthology remix type things, and the next one is Sewer Boyz 2: Giant Sized XMen 1. My contributions are splash page 1 and a Juggernaut pinup. My mind works in collage remixes at all times so Jugs got a Kool-Aid Man treatment, and anything I draw as a static thing in Procreate, I instantly want to animate in Procreate Dreams. The instinct to animate Marvel characters spiraled out of control into a bigger project w 14 1 min episodes of something called Contest of Champions, 2 or 3 being out as I’m writing this. The Simpsons, Futurama, Samurai Jack, Peanuts, Hagar the Horrible, Looney Tunes, Spongebob, Ren and Stimpy, Street Fighter, Aeon Flux etc all sneak their influences in this mashup mess and I felt like posting some designs and talking about things beyond art models 🤣
One of my favorite things is to be super literal w a design- Egghead is a stock photo of an egg and the rest is drawn as if by a 3 year old with crayons. Beast is my cat’s head on top of a Moss Man Masters of the Universe toy, Colossus is made of a warped tim can stock image, Cyclops is part Geordie LaForge. Backgrounds are from video games, other animation, vintage postcards I cut apart and expand w AI in photoshop. It actually would be far simpler to just draw everything 🤪 but sampling/ collage is such a part of my aesthetic that I don’t quite vibe with things that are 100% from human hand.
