May Update
Added 2019-05-02 18:00:00 +0000 UTCHello patrons! Around the Primordial Creative compound, things have gotten a little quiet- I got a part time job in an unusual art installation experiences place called Wonderspaces, which besides cutting deeply into the art making time, has given me a bit of financial break so I can do things I've been meaning to do like work on publications, make t-shirts, hire voice talent for my projects and save up for art making trips.
Even when I was getting a steady stream of cash for freelance earlier this year, I was unable to invest in any of these outlets because I didn't know when the next check would come or in some cases when the people hiring me would pay the next chunk due.
I'm sure I've spoken about the weird irony that having some kind of day job actually allows more focus on personal projects than the insane constant hustle of being fully freelance or surviving on art sales and content creation. Luckily every day job I've had in the last 9 years or so helped me advance in some artistic direction- learning stuff to be able to teach it to others, access to copy machines for zines, being able to edit video and photos on the clock, installing gallery pieces, so on and so forth. I'm really interested in doing New Media art pieces and installation and that's what Wonderspaces is all about.
I'm also meeting a lot of local creatives I never would have since there's a lot of ASU students, graduate students, painters and graphic designers working at Wonderspaces. One of the most important things I think any creative person can do is chop it up with as many other creatives they can especially in their home community and not just on IG or whatever.
As far as shoots go, I've got an absolutely spectacular one in Portland in a few weeks, Nashville at the end of May (delayed from end of April because of starting the new job and water heater exploding). So even though the shoots are taking a back seat, I think the quality level will stay high which is all I really care about. One great shoot is way more important than a dozen half-assed shoots.
The last bit worth mentioning is that in the last 3 months I've accumulated a bunch of gifted/ borrowed technology and I've been too busy to make use of it, but that's a goal this summer- 5 large HD screens, toy making material, 35mm cameras, a "pixel stick" from Raul Gonzo, and a 4x5 camera. I also am learning how to do my own hand crafted hardcover books and of course the digitally controlled installation pieces at Wonderspaces. I always want to transform as an artist and hopefully by the end of August I'm a very different creator than I am at the start of May.
