The Farmer's Fields

A trail follows the edge of a large field, coming to a stone altar and space enough to camp overnight.

This map was inspired by Vinland Saga's second season, and was a lovely excuse for me to take my imagination to the countryside where it's most happy. I figured that this setting is one of those places that every adventuring party finds themselves at one point or another, and that makes for a "high value" battle map in my books.

It features fallow fields behind a low stone wall and a stream. There is also a solitary oak tree, a small crossroads, and a nondescript stone pedestal. I drew this pedestal such that you might put a grey-colored token down to represent a local deity, leave whatever sculpture might be there to the theater of the mind, or perhaps the flat top is meant as a platform for meditation? It's up to you, GM!

I felt as though some nighttime fireflies would help the atmosphere.

So, do all these pieces bring any ideas to your mind? If all else fails, there might be some highwaymen crouched behind the wall! Let us know what you come up with below. :)

Close...I am an almost forever DM with players that like to milk descriptions for any and all potentially useful bits of information. Some of their characters are quite skilled at tracking and reading sign so I try to give sufficient information to hide the really important bits amongst. Also it never hurts to have that little extra piece just in case of that Natural 20 ;-)

You must be a Ranger!

So the state of the vegetation in the middle of a trail and the depth of the wheel ruts might actually tell our intrepid heroes quite a bit about the weight of vehicles and the frequency of traffic...now that is a handy detail to keep in mind :-) Much obliged!

Alembik_1212

They certainly might! It all depends on what sort of traffic this trail gets. I once settled on the rule of avoiding grass in the center for that very reason, but I changed my mind after seeing enough references to the contrary.

Magnificent...as usual! I have just a tiny issue with the way the grass grows in between the ruts on the trail. I can't help but wonder if the vegetation there wouldn't be trampled by the draft animals turning it into barren ground as well.

Will never grow tired of maps like these 🙏✨
