Your 2-Minute November Update (and a poll!)

Hello there! It feels like just yesterday that I was writing the October update, and yet here we are again, haha. What a fun month it was, but let me jump straight to the poll before I go on...

Poll: Would you like future pre-colored token packs to include the white "sticker" base, or a simple shadow base?

Whatever happens, you will still be able to choose any base that you like once they are uploaded to the Editor, this poll is only to ask how you would like to see us package the pre-colored packs that we release to Patreon once a month. For example: October's 152 New Tokens.

I can't ask David and Austin to export both varieties for hundreds of tokens each month, so I hope that we can find a clear preference and make it the standard. I'm grateful for your input in helping us choose. :)

In other news, rootyful (who you probably know from Discord) has done an amazing job with the map variants this month, transforming my Thermal Mines map into overgrown, glacial, and volcanic variants. You can see a preview of these below, and there's links to the rewards at the bottom of the post.

I've been commissioning rootyful to create these map variants since last month's Frozen Forge, and it's clearly been worth it! I couldn't do any better myself, and it's allowed me to pour more time into the line art and take on these more complex projects.

As for this November, I have some map ideas cooking already but I'm always happy to hear your requests and suggestions in the comments. I'd like to tackle a graveyard asset pack at last, and I'd like to try my hand at something sci-fi. What would you like to see?

That's all for now but, before I go, please also accept my sincere thanks for your support. It's truly a dream to work on these projects each day, collaborate with such a passionate team, and share it all with such a fun and friendly bunch of people.

Thank you! :)

We're working on a solution to provide both. I don't want to promise anything yet, but fingers are crossed. :)

Seems like the vote is going in the other direction, but I highly prefer the white sticker base and think the shadow doesn’t add much in terms of readability. Especially when you consider orientation and the black lines on other black backgrounds.

Loafd

Definitely want an option without the base, but if that is not an option, then the white sticker base because it can be colorized or removed if desired. The shadow base cannot.

Adam D'Amore

I think that we will include a version with neither regardless :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I've put example scripts for adding shadows and sticker outlines to a directory full of .png files at once at https://derf.org/stickershad/ - hopefully that would make it feasible for you folks to provide bare, sticker, and shadow versions of the tokens. Feel free to message me if you have any questions, and thanks for all the token art!

Owen Smith

Could there be an option without either?

Looney Studios

Same

As long as there is an option without the shadow so I can put the white sticker behind them in photoshop easily I don't mind either way.

Brandon Rule

I see. Looking forward to it!

That's on purpose. The November rewards will be coming just as soon as I have somethign to share this month. :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Hi Benjamin! They are the "map variants" included in the Gold+ rewards. You can find October's here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/october-2020-42845746/

Did you accidentally link the October rewards instead of the November ones or am I missing something?

I think it's worth a try! I'd definitely be interested to try it if you released a few figures to beta test.

I feel you, we just want to do whats right by most people. Definitely the new token editor will help when it leaves beta <3

David Rhodes Wilson

it looks like shadow is winning but im thinking neither would be better in that case

David Rhodes Wilson

I really hope the white stroke doesn't go away. If they do I'll just have to take time to add them myself

to be honest I actually prefer with neither!

Sam Barrie

I'll be using TokenTool to surround the image with a border, and the white sticker base would force me to universally use a white background for the token instead of having whatever color/style background I want.

Dipper

I love the white sticker base. It just helps the token to stand out on the map. I am PRO WHITE STICKER BASE.

Jeffrey

Hmm, this one's odd for scifi but I would love some more out doors terrain as I run a Tactical Mech RPG by the name of Lancer. So some more "terrain" tiles to mix in with the streets (maybe a "park" tile or some different roofs) I would STILL absolutely LOVE the japanese castle interior. And WOO! Graveyard assets!

Tommy_Dude

Update: turns out it's surprisingly easy to add a white sticker outline using ImageMagick, and shadows can be done as well. Would you consider asking David and Austin to export the tokens without either sticker or shadow if you could run a command afterwards to generate sticker/shadow versions of all the tokens? Further update: example scripts to add shadows/sticker outlines to bare tokens at http://derf.org/stickershad/

Owen Smith

Hello Ross ! Where can we find the map variants made by rootyful, or other map variants that come after the initial maps are released ?

Benjamin Busseniers

Two other points to consider: 1) it's much easier for me to remove the white sticker border than it is for me to add one and 2) the shadows can look weird if you have tokens rotated in different orientations near each other.

Owen Smith

Just commenting in the hope of influencing others: I initially didn't like the white sticker base but then I realized two things that helped me: 1) it makes the tokens stand out a little more against the background and 2) I am able to fill the white with a colour - and I use different colours for each player which allows me to make the tokens really small when needed and still recognize them against a big map...
