Pirates!

Hello there, I need your creative help!

My good friend is getting married in a few weeks and has asked me to throw him a casual one-shot for his bachelor party. We've settled on pirates as the theme, since the session is basically a complex drinking game, he is a big fan of One Piece, and it seems like a perfectly chaotic theme for one day of D&D.

The only thing that is set in stone is that the bachelor will be the invincible, and the other players his expendable first mates. My plan is to lay a map before them dotted with scattered islands, tell them "your goal is to ______" and let them island-hop until they have successfully ______!

I'll be running what I call "5e Lite" where character sheets are simplified and everyone's abilities are on cards. This makes opening a treasure chest a lot of fun, since everyone gets a bunch of new cards! It will also be the main method of progression so, whereas a character might start with a pistol and sword, they will end up with a Staff of Seagulls, Hook of Hurling, Eyepatch of Scrying, and such items. By the end, they should be able to _______ with relative ease!

Of course, I want the whole voyage to be as kooky and dramatic and memorable as possible.

SO, the reason I'm writing this is to humbly ask you for your best concepts for magic items, sea and land encounters, enemy ship concepts, island oddities, and anything else you can think up which would be fun to interact with. Oh, and that all-important _______! Whatever should that be?

As thanks, I will be sharing all the hastily-made maps here afterward, so let's brainstorm some crazy ideas and make this a night to remember!

Comments

Haha, good stuff!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

A conch shell that deafens people in a cone with the sound of the sea. Starfish throwing stars

A solid idea Todd! I will keep it in mind. :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I like Todd's general idea, and I'd add that I think it would be hilarious to throw them a curve ball like so many comedy movies do, via the guy who hires them being pretty vague and though they have an accurate enough description to figure it out once they are actually on the ship, some how they don't know until then that the treasure is a person. It would take some brainstorming to figure out the best way to do that but the hilarity of having a heist turn into a kidnapping with a group that is not prepared for it would be priceless.

IMHO, as this is a bachelor party..... While carousing at a tavern, like good pirates do, they should be approached by a slimy, used-car-dealer type character who is looking to hire a pirate group to help him. He used to be a court adviser and was ousted. To get revenge, he wants to steal the country's greatest treasure. As it happens, the treasure is being moved by ship in one week's time. He would like you to find and steal the treasure... He doesn't even care if you keep it. He just wants to cause trouble for his country. BASIC OUTLINE: Steal treasure from royal navy Hide on an island until search passes (RP TIME) Have treasure stolen from pirates by rival group Chase rival group across a few islands Regain treasure. OH... treasure is a princess representing the bride.

Also, will you be sharing the ability/equipment cards when you're done?

in my game next week, the party is entering a tower in the desert. In the tower there is a large crystal in the top room. The crystal transports them to a sea elf tower under the ocean. Where they encounter a female in distress being chased. She swinms through the tower windows which have a magical air berrier. The elf is of Nobal blood. She needs to be returned to her home the sea and the attackers dealt with. It’s a lot more detailed than that but that’s it generally.

TheYodax

Could have them encounter The Dread Pirate Roberts from princess bride

TheYodax

Mm, like a silver bullet for mean looking rival ships. I think I will add this to the pool, thanks!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I'd like to keep the bachelor's character alive - this seems like a pretty creative way to do so, thanks!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Perfect! I'm using this one.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I know a fair bit, and I have to agree. The bachelor will get a huge kick out of finding them!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Very creative! I like it.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I love WebDM! I will have to rewatch this one in preparation. :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Ooo, very thematic! I'm adding it to my list.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Haha, I like the idea too. I don't think the insides of said fish is ready for a broadside!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Thanks Yodax, this is some imaginative stuff!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Thanks Euphonetics! These are some good ideas, and I'm sure I'll incorporate them some way.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I've actually been immersing myself in it recently - I think it's the reason I settled on a seafaring adventure in the first place! Some very good ideas.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

There's no one better to guard forgotten treasure!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Perhaps a Kenku captain with a well-dressed monkey perched on his shoulder?

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I think everyone is expecting the Kraken, and it would be a shame to disappoint. ;) ;)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Absolutely! I like the idea of having a simultaneous sea map and battle map, so that the party can have battle on the deck while the captain (also dealing with on-deck threats) can direct the NPC crew to battle on the sea map with the Kraken / rival ship / Karl.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Sounds like a perfect character for a cast of whacko pirates - one for the character sheet lucky dip, I think!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

It will mostly be an improvised mess, but I would be happy to release ship plans and any other concrete content I whip up. :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Buster Ball Cannon Ball Rare/ Ranged Weapon Attack 600/2400ft One target/ Multiple Splash Heavy Black Cannon ball With magic Runes carved into it When Fired from a cannon the Runes Glow bright. When it his a target it does 8d10 damage. After the first hit the Ball Heats up and does 4D10 Piercing Damage to any creature with in a 20ft radius.

Doing2Learn

Haha, just the sort I'm looking for.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Not a bad hook!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Mmm I can just imagine them punching through the hull and directly invading the food stores!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I love this idea Mike. I will give it some thought, but the dowry idea seems golden!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Funnily enough, I already have these guys making waves (ha) in my regular Japan-inspired game! Their ship is a titanic shark, though.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I think I will borrow the concept, thanks! Survival not guaranteed.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

An amazingly useful list, thank you Jain!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

Haha, I love these! I will add them to my tables, thanks.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I think I may steal all of those, at the very least for my random tables, thanks!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

The Blind Parrot A fragile, yet useful pet. Well trained. Follows simple commands. Can't see. When perched on your shoulder you can see any and all potential demises for your character. These appear as faded corpses on the edge of your vision, and can be used to avoid many dangers. For example: If you enter a clearing and see your corpse cut and eaten, then you can assume a wild tiger lies nearby. If you see a drowned and bloated corpse in the corner of your cabin, a dangerous storm is coming. A smart player could potentially avoid ALL harm by using the clues the parrot gives them.

Whale's Bane Heavy Crossbow +1 (requires attunement) A heavy, sodden, wooden +1 crossbow that creaks just from carrying it. It has a flight groove that has old, archaic runes inscribed on it. The crossbow has advantage to hit against any aquatic creature. Once per long rest, you can speak the words "Come, Ishmael!" to transmute the loaded bolt in the crossbow into a large, enchanted, whaling harpoon that deals 3d6 on a successful hit. The harpoon automatically counts as a critical hit if it successfully hits an aquatic creature.

I don't know how much you know One Piece, but are you adding Devil Fruits? They're a pretty big part of the series, and would make for some interesting cards/abilities.

In a recent pirate adventure, the boat they attacked and boarded was hauntingly empty. When they got below decks, they discovered small versions of large creatures. (Dinosaurs in this case because it was set off Chult). Turns out this was a smuggling operation with a large entrance to below deck that shrank creatures to make them easier to transport. The battle ensues and little easy to fight things become large, hard to kill things when they get to the top deck. It was a fun dynamic.

Jason Sansbury

If I were running a pirate adventure, I'd definitely add some "royal navy" rivals trying to take the treasure for themselves I'm a huge supporter of webDM, and they talked about running a pirate adventure in particular here: "<a href="https://youtu.be/teB8cny0FSs" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/teB8cny0FSs</a>"

one of my current characters has something called the white-hilt blade. it allows you to cast darkness once per day as well as invisibility with +10 move speed. since my character is a pirate, I reflavored the blade so the hilt is carved to resemble a squid, and the darkness spell looks like ink spreading through water. maybe if it's just a one-shot you could bump it up to using 1d4 charges or something

i like the idea of being swallowed by a gigantic fish and having a dungeon to fight out of.

A old salty 3 wooden legged (stumpy)pirate kidnaps the hero’s wife, his love but his one weakness as well. His kriptinite. Comes home after drinking and sees a parchment attached to his door with a dagger. The hook, is that it’s his wife’s plan all along . She is tired of his adventuring and late night pub visits.so off they go hiring a old swoop to take them from island to island hit in the trail of the dreaded 3 legged pirate, who is her liaison in this whole fiasco. Can have them checking brothels along the way, which comical moments of the whores know if old (twisted twig)alias. They eventually make there way to the water tower of the zombie lagoon. A tower surrounded by water and half submerged.makes for interesting maps just some ridiculous senerio. Ogre Pirates maybe... Get caught in a lighting storm... Or a enormous school of flying fish..That sharks are chasing...attack the boat One of the islands could be a grave yard for enormous sea creatures...That have lost treasure within them... Could have the Island owned by some strange aquatic tribe...bulbous eyes ...bad breath and a burping disorder...But extremely helpful..almost to much so... Anyhow I hope you have a good time.I wish I could see the end result of the adventure... Have fun guys

TheYodax

Finally (sorry for the multiple posts), consider looking at the Odyssey for inspiration. It was about a hero island hopping to get home, so there are many good ideas to steal. Angry sea gods, the enchanting sirens, witches that turn people into animals, a gateway to hell, a bag full of the four winds, a giant monster they have to outsmart instead of just kill...

Euphonetics

Maybe they have to find a lost treasure? Or hunt a mythical beast terrorizing the land? Or take the ship and booty of a pirate lord? Or find their missing crew member, the only one who can navigate them home?

Euphonetics

Morph Wondrous Item, rare This item looks like a small brass sphere about the size of a bedknob. As a bonus action the user can say Morph’s name and the name of any small or tiny item to transform morph into it (i.e. a weapon, thieves tools, rope). Alternatively Morph can turn into a medium or large item for one minute (i.e. a tent, raft, catapult, etc.) after which time it will return to its default form until a long rest has been completed. Any item that morph becomes is a +1 item or weapon. Morph is sentient, and is very proud of itself, and enjoys showing off. Fun for wacky creative ideas. One of my players used it to drop a metal shed on someone!

Masque of Meisna This white stone masque bears the image of a blank, expressionless face. When a willing creature dons the masque, they are polymorphed into one of the following forms for an hour. This effect cannot be ended early. After use, the mask cannot be used until the following day. If an unwilling creature dons the masque, they must make a DC 10 Charisma Saving Throw. On a success they are not transformed and are immune to the effects of the masque for 24 hours. 1d8 disguises 1. A mime. You retain your abilities, but you are silenced for the duration. 2. An old vagrant in rags, buzzing with flies. You have disadvantage on all charisma checks. 3. A circus bear. Use the brown bear statistics from the monster manual or players handbook. 4. A small tree. Your movement is halved, and you gain a weakness to fire. 5. A child riding a mule. You are both the child and the mule, and the two cannot separate. 6. A short noble wearing a crown. A red carpet unfurls itself directly in front of you in whatever direction you move, rolling back up behind you. 7. A stone statue of a faun with a set of pipes. Your movement is halved, and a steady stream of water gushes from your mouth when you open it. You have resistance to slashing and piercing damage for the duration. 8. A skeletal figure in a black hooded robe. You can cast speak with the dead innately, and can cast inflict wounds once at 2nd level (+5 to hit).

Euphonetics

You should definitely have sea-zombies like the barnacle crusted soldiers from Davy Jones' crew in Pirates of the Carribean. <a href="https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f7/6d/de/f76dde86ea731daae3af59fdc0b544df.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f7/6d/de/f76dde86ea731daae3af59fdc0b544df.jpg</a>

Nate Hastings

I’ve had an idea to have an evil Pirate boss/NPC that has a loyal Kenku first mate (as a surrogate for a stereotypical parrot).

FedoraMark

ADD THE KRAKEN!!! (Not a magical item but whats a pirate adventure without one? Also! Dnd beyond just uploaded its stats and a vid on how to play one for dms!! Also rare items like efficient quiver is always a winner! Or the “enchanted” weapon kunai that is something comparable to Minato’s “GOD TECHNIQUE” from Naruto!

Ulises Park

Consider running at least one naval combat encounter. And by that I mean, you can make a "ship" just as you would a player, with its own special abilities and combat actions. You can find some ideas here: <a href="http://www.dmsguild.com/product/236198/Ships-Are-People-Too-A-Guide-to-More-than-Naval-Combat" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.dmsguild.com/product/236198/Ships-Are-People-Too-A-Guide-to-More-than-Naval-Combat</a> which can, of course, be simplified into "5e Lite" But along these lines, if you create ships for the party, you can have big, dramatic fights with a Kraken, or a flying vorpal whale name Karl, or some dramatic combat scenario involving a giant whirlpool. (All of these things may, of course, be used as ideas of encounters that do not involve combat).

As for a suggestion, I think a fun character would be a land-bound fish-person (maybe due to a terrible curse put upon him by a God-Kraken?) which means he has to walk around with a box of water on his head. I'm picturing a copper frame with thick glass panels riveted in, with some kind of magical seal around his neck to stop the water from flowing out. Maybe he has to replace the water once a day to maintain oxygen content? Could be a side-quest hook.

Tyler Moore

Please please PLEASE release this on here once you've finished it! I'd love to run something like this to introduce people to DnD, a 5e lite system sounds awesome and the setting sounds like so much fun.

Tyler Moore

I know a great item that will let you find out who your real friends are. <a href="https://78.media.tumblr.com/7ed72995d0795ba61b14aee2217eddc7/tumblr_inline_p5x970oJJd1swukw4_1280.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://78.media.tumblr.com/7ed72995d0795ba61b14aee2217eddc7/tumblr_inline_p5x970oJJd1swukw4_1280.jpg</a>

Poptard

I reccomend a corgi-sized mantis shrimp for an enemy! They'd be small but pack a MASSIVE and hilarious punch!

When I ran bachelor party games, I always tried to incorporate the fact that a wedding was about to happen into the story. So quite a few were "your bride-to-be has been taken by your rival/dark lord, etc." Or, they were questing for the wedding ring of all wedding rings. It keeps the mood light. In your case, having a pirate bride-to-be set her dowry ("Bring me the horn of PaaErost, and I will consider wedding ye!") would be an option.

Definitely a Kuo-toa pirate ship of garbly fish people. Now or never right?

Finnen Cerises

my main character is a waterbending Halfling Pirate named Jack Falcon, always mistaken for a child. Got into the dnd5e universe through a portal accident from another gamesystem where i played him in another group. Tiny man, big golden hearth, mountain sized tales. Never lets honesty get in the way of a good story. Rescued his ship from a group of human slavers (actually let my starfinder players encounter the liberation of the slaver ship by Jacks uprising under the slavers in a Holedeck malfunction one shot, apparantly he will portal to the pathfinder universe and write down his tales to become holo-novels centuries later) but lost it due to superstition. After his portal accident got by as a guide on a swamp cruise thing (including embarrassing frog mascot outfit) until he got bitten by adventure again. Your welcome to use him as an npc (just don't force him trough another portal, think BA of the a-team) i could give you his character sheet if needed.

I may not have a lot in the way of pirate adventures, but I have OODLES of seemingly useless magic items to recommend from Zanzibar's Bizarre Bazaar (our resident Deals Warlock). Many of these were scrounged together from silly D&amp;D podcasts, reddit posts, and a few inspired from in-jokes in my group. <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uH__eDohRT6uvi4TVIQmjqDIlYYySHmrVYQsEPhJ98U/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uH__eDohRT6uvi4TVIQmjqDIlYYySHmrVYQsEPhJ98U/edit?usp=sharing</a>

As for magic items I have a few I used before that were fun. A magic weapon of Casanova so you use Cha instead of Str or Dex, or the wabbajack from oblivion and you can just have a firebolt that also calls for a wild sorcery roll, a dragon shield that can use burning hands once per dawn, the classic folding boat, the "scry-patch," grappling hook hand, and I can't remember much more.

I am currently in the process of putting together a Pirate campaign of my own, using your incredible sea maps and ship tokens, so perfect timing! Currently I have a Necromancer Captain leading a JuJu zombie crew, A Harpy Witch Queen and her subjects roosted upon a rocky crag, a Japanese inspired trade vessel secretly harbouring a group of Ninjas and an abandoned wizard tower hidden beneath the waves home to a Merman Sorcerer. There is a bunch of good Pirate tables out there too, Zak Sabbath's blog has a wavecrawl post with a bunch of events, and things to catch while fishing!

I think I must make a point to include all three of these. Good stuff!

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

If you need a weird ship to come across, I’d suggest looking up Octavianus. I’m planning to use it in my own campaign at one point. I also love the idea of an alive island; not necessarily the people-eating kind, but maybe it can turn out to have been a giant animal all along? (Like in a:tla.) I think sirens or mermaids should definitely make an appearance at one point. Here’s some variety: <a href="http://orriculum.tumblr.com/post/158647359863/types-of-mermaids" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://orriculum.tumblr.com/post/158647359863/types-of-mermaids</a>

Ronnie Silverlake

How about having the Dread Pirate LeChuck kidnap his bride-to-be? :D I'm not familiar with One Piece but I would assume for this event you can dig knee deep into clichees of the setting.

Lukas

The island that eats people (a la Life of Pie) could make an appearance. Navigational tools make for good magic items. Weird trade goods are a fun, thematic treasure. Sea monsters seem essential.

Wow, it sounds like a oneshot unto itself. I'll probably borrow more than one idea from it. :)

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

I'm definitely borrowing a lot from it already! I'll definitely be investigating it more.

Ross from 2-Minute Tabletop

You should use Index Card RPG.

Matthew Shaker

If the setting is the One Piece world, I would suggest a good trip to Thriller Bark :D it's the biggest ship around, so big it contains an entire island! Not to mention the entire island is huge maze of forests and traps! Also the castle at the center of the island is full of riddles, misleading foes and moving walls, a true labirinth! Something similiar would be awesome as a setting for a one shot imho!
