The Scanline Classic (for EL wire!)

Ahoy-hoy, wonderful people!

Yes, it's an old-timey TV that incorporates EL wire to give that classic cathode ray scan line feel! And it's another print made up of a multitude of parts :D

You'll notice that the EL wire is wrapped around a caddy that keeps thing nice and neat! It's really just a shape that fits behind the curved glass panel and which incorporates channels for 2.3mm EL wire.

The ends have a kind of comb for aiding in looping the wire back into the other direction - I filled in every second line, then went back up and filled in the gaps just so that the bends in the wire weren't quite as severe.

The caddy fits in behind the curved "glass", which in turn fits behind the front panel. Then a securing plate bolts into place on the inside to hold things in place.

The bolts use the antenna and the feet as "nuts", and thereby secure those in place, too :)

Print Description

The Scanline Classic is an assembly with reasonably close-fitting parts, so take care that there aren't any print issues evident that might affect dimensional accuracy! Also, you probably want it to look nice :)

EL Wire Requirements

You'll probably want to use EL wire! The model is designed for 2.3mm wire, which is the common kind. In terms of length, I used a piece that was not quite 3 metres long, and that was just about precisely the amount I needed (but I had to make sure to keep the bends fairly tight in order not to run out (which is what happened the first time I did it). Of course, you could use two different colours and alternate, which would look pretty cool!

Optional Magnets

The back cover is lightly attached by four of our old favourite, 6x3mm cylindrical magnets. These are entirely optional, however, and are really just there to make it quick and easy to access the inside.

Print Dimensions

The outer body object occupies 101mm x 153mm on the print bed and is 62mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

There's nothing specific to stop this being scaled up or down, but obviously the EL wire caddy will no longer precisely fit 2.3mm wire.

Print Orientation

The rear panel prints outside-down, the outer body prints front-down, and the front panel prints front-down as well. The bolts and dials print thread-up, the securing plate prints with the magnet posts pointing upwards. The EL wire caddy prints flat-side-down, the legs print upside-down and the antenna prints right-way-up.

The front glass panel prints vertically! Printing it flat would be a disaster, because approximating curves with layers would just look terrible, so instead there's a platform at the bottom of the glass panel that exists purely so it can be easily printed vertically.

Further Thoughts

I really wish my cheap EL wire driver supported some kind of slow, random flashing that approximated TV output - how cool would that be?

Happy printing!

Comments

yeah random flashing would be cool. But this is still so sick.

I didn't know I needed this until now. Very unique and cool.
