Skull Rose Goblet

Hello, my favourite people!

We are back in vase mode land with this gothic goblet, and as usual it was an adventure getting such a complicated form into a state where it strictly adheres to being printable with one continuous line. Such a fun one, though!

As with the Choc Chip Muffin Box, though, the tricky bit was not the technical aspects at all, but getting the shape of the rose part right. I wanted something that looked dramatic, elegant, a bit gothic, but most importantly still printable in vase mode.

As usual with these kinds of detailed vase mode models, there was much searching for inadvertent unprintable bits, mostly horizontal creases where faces met, and which would be rendered as an unsupported line in the air by the slicer. The slicer preview is the easiest place to find those kinds of issues, just hopping up the layers one at a time, looking for abrupt changes.

Further Thoughts

Much as I love vase mode, I don't especially love how fragile vase mode prints can be. I set the line width larger than usual for these, which helped a great deal with robustness, but you could of course just skip vase mode and instead print in regular mode with 0% infill and no top layers, and then make sure the wall count is sufficient to give robust results!

Happy printing!

xoxo
