Hey, everybody! I hope you're all doing well and having the best holidays possible under the circumstances.
If you haven't been following my Twitter (marthawells1) or dreamwidth blog (marthawells.dreamwidth.org/) for updates (or even if you have, I have been super terrible about keeping up with updates) , I finished a new fantasy novel called Witch King which will be published in 2023 from Tordotcom. I'm working on the next Murderbot novella (which will take place right after Netw...

Hi, everybody. Well, I couldn't get anything new done this month (I'm still trying to finish the new fantasy novel by the end of August) but here's an older sword and sorcery story that hasn't been reprinted anywhere. It's from a shared world fantasy anthology Beyond the Black Gate from 2012, that only had two volumes and not much distribution. But I really had fun with these two characters, so I hope you enjoy it.

Hey, everybody, I messed up and forgot to come here and push the button that tells Patreon to not bill Patrons for the month. (You can only turn off billing for one month at a time.) I always have it on my calendar but just screwed up and didn't do it. I didn't realize it until Patron paid out the money, so I can't just issue refunds. I apologize.
The thing I can do is come up with a story to post here sometime this coming month, so that's what I'll do.
Anyway, sorry about t...

Someone asked a question and it suddenly occurred to me I should share the answer with everybody!
Re: this Patreon: I want to keep the Raksura shorts available, but I'm not planning to add to it. If people want to quit, that's absolutely cool with me, if they want to stay so they can read the stories again, that's cool too. At this point I'm not planning on starting a Murderbot patreon and I'm continuing to turn off billing every month for this one.

I have a new fantasy story out called The Salt Witch https://uncannymagazine.com/article/the-salt-witch/
It's about witches and ghosts and living with all the layers of history, personal history and the history of your world. It took me a year to write this story, and it's very personal to me, (the main character is named after one of my aunts). It came from livin...

Last week Network Effect was released and it was a trip. If the pandemic hadn't happened I would have been about to leave on my first ever book tour. Instead I got a virtual tour, which has been a lot of fun so far. (If you missed it, you can still see me and N.K. Jemisin here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/murderbot/register and me and John Scalzi here: 2020-05-10 13:41:29 +0000 UTC

Hey, everybody. I just figured out (from another Patreon creator) that I could pause my billing cycle but still allow you access to the content. So I've done that. (I should have done it earlier but I didn't realize it was an option.) Anyway, I have to pause it on a month by month basis so I'll make myself a note to pause it for May 1 also. I'm doing okay, so I want people to save the money for other patreons who aren't doing so well.
And I'm still dealing with credit card issues ...

Hey, all, I have been given 10 discount codes for Machina, the serial SF story I was a guest writer on for Serial Box. https://www.serialbox.com/serials/machina The other writers are Fran Wilde, Malka Older, and Curtis C. Chen.

Today, I have a short story, "Obsolescence," in a new free collection called Take Us To A Better Place: Stories.
It's a collection of original art and short stories commissioned by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with the goal of "using the power of fiction to help us imagine, explore, and talk about what a culture of health looks like and how to get there."
There's a forward and intro by Roxane Gay, and Pulitzer-prize winning Pam Belluck.

Just found out I can talk about this now -- there will be an audiobook of The Harbors of the Sun!
The publisher finally got Audible to do it and finish off the series! We've asked for Christopher Kipiniak to be the narrator again but I don't know if they've got him. It depends on his availability and I haven't heard anything.
I'll post when I know more!

So I was at ArmadilloCon this weekend and it was awesome! Even more awesome than it usually is.
I was Special Guest this year and had a lot of programming, especially on Saturday, including an hour interview (conducted by the lovely Jessica Reisman) and an hour reading (I read from Network Effect and then answered questions), plus panels and an autographing. That kept me pretty busy so I didn't get to see hardly any of the other great stuff going on.

I just finished a draft of The Murderbot Diaries: Network Effect. This is the first time I think I almost cried at finishing a novel, not because it was sad, but because I am so fucking relieved to be done. It took about 18 months, with breaks for working on Magic: the Gathering's Dominaria story and some other things, which is about 7-8 months longer than a novel usually takes me to write.
Murderbot's ability to take in information from multipl...

As some of you know, I have problems with anxiety and it's been really bad lately. This book has been a bear to write and even now that I'm past the difficult bits and am finishing up, my brain refuses to believe it's possible to relax. I've also been worrying about the situation with our new cat, who is in a hate/hate relationship with are two other cats, who don't like each other much even at the best of times. We have to keep Max separated from the...

When Moon, Chime, and Root didn't come back when the others did, Jade wasn't worried. She had spent the day at their camp on the mountain-tree platform because she needed the time, and she assumed Moon did as well. After the torrential storm and the cramped uncomfortable night in the leaky knothole, they could all use a rest, and Jade needed to regain her patience before she lost her mind and killed all of Pearl's warriors.
When she sent them all off that morning to h...

eh asked I'm rereading the Raksura series and I'm currently on The Siren Depths (my favorite). I love the scenes at Viridean Sea - the other consorts are so kind to Moon. Will he ever get to see them again? And is the interest they took in Moon typical? Do consorts look out for each other most of the time?
At this point, I don't know, though that would be a good idea for a future story. The interest they took in Moon is very typical of consorts. In big importa...
