Hex Appeal Caddy

Hey there, wonderful people!

It's assembly time!  Slide concentrically-ornamented, curved hexagons (and half-hexagons) down channels to form patterns, look stylish, and improve your standing in any social circle!

As you've no doubt noticed in the image above, there are three different sizes, but they're all sized in multiples of hexagons. The holes at the top are for our old friends 6x3mm magnets, and the half-hexagon tiles have a corresponding magnet hole so that they can neatly secure the tiles to the caddy.

Of course, you could tile the entire thing with the half-sized tiles if that suited your particular style!

Print Description

These are regular mode prints, and the tolerance for the fit of the tiles is reasonably generous.

How many tiles will you need?

* All sizes: 8 half tiles for the top and bottom.

plus:

* Tall: another 28 full tiles.

* Medium: another 20 full tiles.

* Short: another 12 full tiles.

Optional Magnets

Magnets are entirely optional, but if you choose to use them you'll need 8 magnets of the 6mm x 3mm cylindrical variety (i.e. the same ones as always!)

Print Dimensions

The middle bit is the large part, obviously, and is 119mm x 119mm on the print bed and either 214mm, 162mm, or 110mm tall depending which size you print.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

You could probably scale this a little up or down, but obviously the fit of the tiles will get looser and tighter accordingly.  Of course, the magnet holes will also scale and won't be 6mm x 3mm anymore!

Print Orientation

The inner prints right-way-up, as do the tiles.  Though, you could print the tiles upside-down, too, if you really wanted to, and they'll be just fine.

Further Thoughts

Believe it or not, this started out as a vase mode print.  It looked very different, but it was still an assembly.  The problem with vase mode, though, is that even a 45 degree angle on a curve is problematic.  I really wanted my curved 45 degree surfaces, though, so the model evolved into a much more tactile and robust regular-mode print instead!

Happy printing!

xoxo Sven.

this needs a lid please!!!

Ah I’m so glad you like it. If you switched filament at a specific layer height to get another colored background it would be very striking. Maybe it will find its way into a design someday! Also, not for this application, but check out “kumiko” woodworking. Traditionally made into wooden privacy screens but there are awesome trinket boxes too. Lots of cool designs - but my favorites use several patterns on one larger item, giving a cohesive design, but with varying pattern density. Cool stuff!
