Concentric Atom Cases

Howdy, wonderful people!

Remember the Atom Case, fairly recently?  That's one of my favourite practical box designs, and it's been given a bit of an overhaul!  We now have:

* A new "long" version that's rectangular rather than square

* Magnet closure option for each box

* A filament-change friendly style change to the lid!

The Long Concentric Atom Case

Yep, it's a different size!  It still works much the same way, of course, and has the same double hinge on the back/side/whatever it is.

Magnetic Closure Option

As usual, we're talking 6x3mm cylindrical magnets, here, same as all the other magnetic options.  There are a few changes to the geometry of the boxes, including the addition of an angled lip as a handle for pulling the lid open.

Concentric Ring Patterns

The orginal Atom Case had an inset pattern that was intended for multimaterial printing, but which wasn't useful for single material printers.  This one's now designed to work with a simple filament change - read below in Printing Tips for some more thoughts on that!

Printing Tips

Since this is an articulated model, you'll want to make sure you don't have any printing issues such as stringing or overextrusion that might bind moving parts together!  You'll also want your first layer to be nice and neat, since that's the bit you'll see when the lid is closed!

For a nice colour effect, try swapping the filament after the first two or three layers, or even changing the filament multiple times!  The holes in the pattern taper inwards to a point, so multiple colour changes should give an "outline" effect to the pattern.  Don't forget to print the ring at the same time, if you're using the threaded version! :)

The boxes print with the lids open, flat on the print bed, like so:

Print Dimensions

These dimensions are for the thread versions - the magnetic versions take up slightly less room.

The square Atom Case occupies 80mm x 185mm on the bed, and is 40mm tall.

The long Atom Case occupies 158mm x 121mm on the bed, and is 40mm tall.

Further Thoughts

Filament changing is such an easy way to add colour to prints, and it's something I often overlook when styling designs!

Happy printing :)

Any advice on adjusting the dimensions on these in a Slicer to fit specific items?

I love these cases, the long atom ones. I turn handcrafted pens and have found these a great way to ship them and give the client a nice storage box. They would be perfect if they were a tad shorter. For a couple of reasons, it would take a lot less padding inside the box to make them stable, and would then fit in a small USPS priority box. I think from top to bottom around 30-31mm would be perfect. Most of the pens we turners make would fit. Thanks for considering.

Quite possibly! How wide?

Clockspring3D

You want 6x3mm cylindrical magnets :)

What magnets should I buy? Love this case.

I am printing the long ATOM case with thread in 60mm height (120%), and it's looking great with 2 colors. My son asking if you can make it wider?

Done! Uploaded to dropbox as "Long Concentric Atom Case 50mm tall - Thread.stl". It's easy enough to adjust, so let me know how it goes! :)

Would be able to increase the height of the Atom long box to 50mm please. I extend the Z height but I am not sure if that will affect the lid.

That's a brilliant idea about adding something to indicate what's inside!

Clockspring3D

Wonderful! :)

Clockspring3D

very nice & usefull i will add a number or pictogram on the side so i know whats inside if the staple of Atom Cases gets bigger & bigger. Also the style of TWOCOLOR is a nice idea ! Looks great

Now your talking, these are perfect for what I need.
