Planetary Phone Stand

Howdy, wonderful people!

Do you  need an overly-complicated way to prop your phone up, one that says to everyone around you that you have a 3D printer?  Then this is the model for you!  The angle of the stand adjusts by pivoting on a set of planetary gears, and is then fixed in place by tightening a sliding bolt form the opposing side.

You might recognise this as the somewhat more refined descendant of an experimental model from some time ago!  That one was a much more difficult print, and a much larger one, too.  This version rethinks how the bolt prints, and allows it to slide back and forth as well as rotate.

More importantly, this version fits within a 180mm square, which  means it'll print on a Prusa Mini!

It also looks much cooler and more industrial than ever!

Printing Tips

This is a model with a few parts that print in close proximity to each other!  So, you'll want to make sure your bottom layer is nice and neat, and that you don't have any issues with stringing, overextrusion or anything else that might bind moving parts together!

The model prints hinged open, like so:

Print Dimensions

The Planetary Phone Stand occupies 173mm x 164mm on the print bed, and prints to 60mm height.

Further Thoughts

Thank you to everyone who has prodded me for so long about getting a new version of this phone stand ready and published!  I really do love all the feedback and enthusiasm, and it's always such a great motivator!

This is amazing! My son and I have printed it a couple times and can’t figure out the tricks to bending it so it doesn’t break. Are there any preliminary cuts we need to make or anything like that so it can bed and fold easily?

Maggie Owens

I'm so glad you got it working well! I'm constantly amazed how well printers work. They're such simple machines but they have such incredible precision!

I really love this Stand and I'm completely new to 3d printing so this was my first long print around 12 hours with PLA. I thought it was going to fail because I couldn't get the elephant foot under control but with cura and the initial layer hight it still came out really nice. As for the next print i now know I have to reduce the flow around 5% and the heatbed not to high heated up. Thank you for the experience and your work to show me how far I can still go with my printer.

I just started printing the larger version on my Qidi X-Plus in PETG, mainly because I wanted to try switching the extruders and printing with PETG. I'll post a photo once completed. Thanks for a great design.

Amazing print, looks great on my desk! Really appreciate these designs.

Just finished printing this in a rainbow filament and it turned out amazing! This is the kind of thing 3D printers are made for! Thank you so much! Keep them coming πŸ€™πŸ»

That's a really interesting idea! There's already a wider version on dropbox, but a landscape-dedicated version wouldn't need to be nearly as tall...

Clockspring3D

There have been a lot of requests for that! Consider it a work in progress :)

Clockspring3D

My use for any phone stand is to watch in landscape mode. Have you any plans for making a version with landscape mode accounted for? I, personally, have no need to stand a phone in portrait mode.

I was also going to ask about recommended settings. In Cura at 0.2mm, 20% infill and 50mm/s speed (20mm/s first layer), and whether the mesh fix option to ignore union and print as one is on or off, the time to print is 1day 5hours 55mins. EDIT: Sliced at 10% infill and the print time only reduced by two hours.

This is amazing! Any chance of getting a remix with room for a wireless charging coil?

Do you have a recommended print quality for this model? Like .15 vs .20 and should the infill be higher an 15%. New to 3d printing so I may not know what settings are normal.

How wide would that need to be? :)

Clockspring3D

Bloody love this. Just tweeted the print out. Can you make a wider version for the switch console? Would be perfect!

Robin Edwards

Woohoo, that's awesome! The sneak peek looks very neat indeed 😍

Clockspring3D

This will be shown on the channel this Sunday! WOOO!!!

Joel Telling

That's wonderful, thank you! 😍

Clockspring3D

On my tiktok, I had a video using one of your models that got 14 thousand views. I made sure to put your name in it. :)

Andrew Smith

Hmm, that would be very cool indeed...

Clockspring3D

Awesome!

Clockspring3D

Hehe, thank you! <3

Clockspring3D

Awesome! :D

The amount of time, creativity and raw talent is AMAZING!!! Great design... Thanks!!

Have you thought about adding a wireless charging

Printed great in color changing filament :D

Andrew Smith

Oh, interesting question! Hmm, actually, no, the central post would move up, but the gears that lock into it wouldn't, so that would be a problem! Were you just hoping to make the stand effectively wider? If so, how wide? πŸ€”

Clockspring3D

If I scale this in the Z Level will that be okay?

Cathy O'Malley

There certainly is! There's also room for the cable to be routed past the gears and out the back :)

Clockspring3D

Meant to ask, is there room for a charging cable, so you can turn it into a charging stand as well?

That's always the toughest question :D

Clockspring3D

Hmm, yeah, you really do need to have confidence in the levelness of the bed for something like this! There's always the option of something like a raft, though it might leave the outside surfaces a bit rough...

Clockspring3D

Awesome! :D

Clockspring3D

Haha, thank you!

Clockspring3D

Going to Time-lapse one now! Only difficulty is to figure out the color :)

3D Musketeers

just about to give this a go, but looks tight on my Ender 3,which doesnt have the best level bed,so sadly this maybe a fail for me,but ill let you know.

I am going to start printing these up as Christmas presents....

Holy Mother of God, I am going to print like a million of these! So happy to see another suggestion come to life, and I'm sure this is going to be a very popular make! Thank you!
