Diagonal Slider Box

Howdy, wonderful people!

Yes, it's a pencil box!  Well, it could be a box for lots of things, but it's long enough to hold pencils, which turn out to be somewhat longer than most regular pens!  Who knew?  Okay, that's probably common knowledge, but it's one of those things I'd never really considered until designing this box.

The thing is, I wanted this to fit, ideally, on a 180mm square printer bed, but pencils are 210+ millimetres long.  So, the box shifted diagonally!  The pointy ends mean that the box makes maximum use of the diagonal length of the bed, yielding plenty of room for your graphite-based writing implements.  Just for neatness, there's an insert that can optionally go into the middle to divide things up a bit.

Now there's one other thing I've started working with here - magnets!  I have one or two magnetic closures in the distant past, but generally I've not given them much thought.  However, they are pretty great for closures, and provide a little bit of a change from the bolts and rings I dearly love using :)  In this case, there are holes in the design just waiting for magnets to be glued into them.

But, which magnets?!  There's a world of options out there, but I've decided to go with 6x3mm cylindrical magnets since they're easy to get, relatively small, which is useful for incorporating into designs, and are remarkably powerful.  So, I'll stick to using those in future projects too.

All that said, the magnets are entirely optional!  The design will work just fine without them :)

Magnets

For reference: this box will optionally cater for 6x3mm cylindrical magnets.  You probably only need one pair, but there's space for two if you're so inclined!

Printing Tips

There's nothing too tricky about printing this one!  It's all designed for straightforward printing.  All the parts print right-side up, like so:

Print Dimensions

The largest part of this print is the box body itself, which will fit diagonally across a 170x170mm square.

Further Thoughts

There's something particularly satisfying about lids that slide into boxes, and the magnetic click as the parts come together really adds something to that.  It's yet another design that I keep fidgeting with on my desk when I should be writing up Patreon posts :)

Happy printing!

I've printed the lid 3 times trying to get it to look nice. The main shape looks good, but I just can't get the hexagons to come out clean. Anyone had success and mind sharing your print settings?

That's awesome! 😁

Nice design, my son came across and ask me to make it for them, so 2 in the making.

Haha, magnets do have a bit of a retro vibe! 😁

Wow!! So nice, so 80's :) Love the magnets. I use them a lot in my prints.

Yes, must print more... for the kids... yes, the kids...

Makes me want to go back to school. Luckily I have a niece that will appreciate it ( and if I happen to make an extra for myself shhhhh)

Perfect, just what I was looking for.

Awesome, I'm planning to stick those magnets into some other designs, so hopefully they'll come in handy! It's amazing how strong those little things are!

Clockspring3D

Haha, that's fantastic! I hope this works better for you :D

This is so great! And it inspired me to get a bunch of 6x3 cylindrical magnets on Amazon. 😆 I live in Asia and my local hardware store only carries those super strong rare earth magnets .... But there are usually too many choices on Amazon for me to figure out which ones I should get.... now I know! Thanks for the tip! And definitely printing up the pencil case. The insert is great too!

Holy Christ, I was JUST browsing Thingiverse for a pencil case for my son and ... this popped up!!! I made one a couple of months ago but the lid was too loose and there was nothing (as a magnet) to keep the lid in place so he abandoned it. But now this! Thanks a lot Sven!
