Flourish Gift Box

Hey there, wonderful people!

For many of us it's that time of year where we're faced with how best to wrap cylindrically-oriented gifts.  Well, now there's an answer!  That's right, with the amazing powers of 3D printing we can now perfectly package our presents.

So, what do we actually have here?  Well, it's a cylindrical box that has a lid with a twist-locking mechanism.  And a bow.  The bow fits into an inset in the lid, and a bolt from the underside of the lid keeps that bow in place!  The inset means that the bow won't inadvertently unscrew the bolt when used to turn the lid, though you could always add a little glue to it all if you wanted it to be more secure :)

Oh, and three different heights are provided for the main box model.

How did this one come about?  Well, I was looking at bows used in wrapping, and I couldn't help but appreciate how simple but effective some of the designs were.  I always have a thing for bringing a design back to its simplest elements, and so I wondered how simple I could keep a print-in-place bow design and still give the overall impression of a bow.

However, with the bow designed, the rest of the box went through endless variations before ending up round.  There were square boxes with hinges, hyperboloids that looked like odd cakes, and other strange things that just didn't really cut it as a gift box.   The idea of the twist lock was the deciding factor, though - I couldn't pass up that once it was in my head :)

Printing Tips

Nothing tricky here!  The only overhangs are on the inside of the bow, where nobody's really going to see them, and they'll quite likely be just fine anyway :)  No support needed!  The parts print right-way-up, like so:

Final Thoughts

Part of me did consider sticking the bow design onto the Machine Canister, just for fun, but I managed to resist that impulse!  Bows and cogs could be a fun mix, actually... but for now, I'll stick to the twist lock on this one :)

Happy gifting!

xoxo

Sven.

Howdy! Sounds quite annoying :) Do you have a photo/screenshot that shows where the problem is? Either send it to me at clockspring3d at gmail dot com, or come join the friendly discord server and post it there!

Sven, I'm having a problem with the Bow portion of this model. When I slice it in Cura 4.8 it has some "start printing in mid-air" sections right where the bottom of the "bow curls" start that kill the print. Anyone else have this problem slicing/printing the bow portion? Sucks because the body and lid came out great. Anyone else trying this print - make sure you can print the bow first!

Sweet. Wife was asking me about it. I hope you post it soon. And thank you bro.

Why yes, yes there is :) Square box is test printing right now, in fact!

Clockspring3D

Is there a way to make a square box with a bow on it. A bigger bow. Like a Christmas present box. A square and rectangular box also. ???

Peter Laucella

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! :D

Clockspring3D

That is so cool! :D Congratulations!

Clockspring3D

Dude all your stuff is awesome. Can't wait to print it all!

Perfect box for the engagement ring I am going to be gifting this year :-D

That's a lot of presents...

Thank you, Cathy! :)

Well I just adore this. I printed the short one, on account of I couldn't wait for the tall version to print. Yet again, you have created my new favorite model. Thanks for the holiday present of a present box we can present to someone as a present with a present inside.

Nope, not vase mode, just normal printing, but you won't need any supports. Vase mode wouldn't be appropriate for something like this - it would be a bit too fraglie!

Clockspring3D

The Canister prints in Vase mode right? (I'm new to 3D Printing a little over a week in. )

It only protrudes a few millimetres, but if it's in the way you could always just glue the bow to the lid instead of using the bolt :)

How far into the box does the bow nut stick? I'm making it up to 210mm the max on my MK3s. I have something about 205mm I want to wrap in it. It is going to be close. I'll find out after I print one. If this won't work in it, I'll find something else to put in it. ;)

Thank you! :D
