Cranker Console Box

Sometimes a form just names itself!  I couldn't call this anything else but a console, though I'm not even sure why.  It evokes feelings of some kind of slightly retro era, those inset dots, those curved ribs.  It's like a desk phone that never was.  And it has cogs!

Well, it has one primary cog that drives it all.  Hidden behind the lid is a suspended gear that matches a strip of teeth across the lid back, and rotating the attached top handle (cleverly styled as a gear, too) opens the thing up!

Once again, this print requires no support, and everything prints in place, ready to go!  It prints upright, but the intention is that it rest back on a bit of an angle, for that true retro charm.

So, what was the hard bit of this design?  Holding the lid in place as it moves!   I went through a few concepts, including putting the cog on the outside and having support struts pierce the lid, but the final design was much simpler, and effectively suspends the bottom rail via the top and side, and it works quite nicely :)

Creative Printers will find this design on Dropbox under Cranker Console Box!  Oh, and it's time I update the link - make sure to grab the new one from the usual spot!

Have fun!

Aww, that's a shame about the knob part! It's definitely the most vulnerable part of that print!

Was sad when i checked on this one and the knob mechanism didn't work out. Will hopefully master increasing infill in this spot and try again. Still works opening manually after removing the spaghetti knob though so is on my work desk :)

My pleasure, and thank you so much for your support! ๐Ÿ˜

Best thing about your patreon is not only we get awesome models to print but also video tutorials on how you designed it. Thanks a lot.
