Shooting on location can be a pain in the ass and can easily turn into a nightmare. It's a lot of work and there are many more variables compared to working in a studio: cold/heat, getting to the location, comfort, carrying all the equipment and clothes, people interrupting, working on time because of changing natural light, mosquitoes, no mirrors or toilets, and a long etc... But it's worth it!!
If you find a good location the truth is that the photos and the result will be much more believable.
I work less on outdoor locations than I would like to. Mostly because I pay a rent for a shared studio, to be able to store my cosplays and props and to be able to create new messy projects without destroying my home... And obviously also there's the fact that it's very difficult to create professional boudoir/pinup photography outdoors; but I miss it, it feels more like being in the middle of a movie and it's easier to get carried away by the emotions/performance when you are on location, and shooting days becames a mini adventure.
For this Matrix photostory of a chase and fight between an Agent and Trinity, we shot in 5 different locations. We were looking for the industrial and decadent look of the movie and we shoot inside 2 shattered warehouses and 3 different building roofs.
We were lucky Matrix is all urban environments, because finding good locations is harder than it looks, especially when you do science fiction like I do (Barcelona is a very classic city). Of course I can use urban environments for cyberpunk settings, but when I need spaceships or very futuristic locations, things get more complicated... Unfortunately I can't go to the forest every week to create photosets inspired by the 24th century.
But I really want to do more outdoors photoshoots this year, so I'm trying to create a list with real locations that inspire me stories about the future!
Do you have good futuristic locations in your country and city?
